hitting himself

my relative's son aged 17 years suffering from MENTAL RETARDATION. First he was diagnosied as ADHD with non-verbal. And he was continuous use of medicine of attentrol 18 mg and prodep 20 mg regularly for the past 5 years. Presently he started hitting himself on head with his hands and asking others to beat on his head and loudly crying regularly. When they consulted a doctor he advised them to use sizodon syrup(1 ml) and pacitane 2mg tablets and saying that is the only remedy available and it is for life time. But his parents are afraid of side effects of these medicines. Can anyone suggest the best solution for this type of problem particulary to stop injuring himself.? Thanks in advance.

Re: hitting himself

Honestly this type of self harm sounds like a symptom of the mental retardation as opposed to the "self harm" that is generally discussed on this board. The self harm that is generally discussed her is more emotional based, a choice of ways to deal with internal pain. I'm not sure that your friends son is making a "choice".

Re: hitting himself

Recently we visited one psychiatrist regarding my son's problem. They advised us to use RISCON-LS ie the combination of risperidone & trihexyphenidyl, 4 mg regularly at night. But we are very much afraid of side effects of risperidone to use it regularly. Can any one suggest me how to control the side effects of risperidone, if we take it regularly..? Thanks in advance..
