Injections after Prostatectomy

I am 5 months post-op from radical protatectomy. I began using Edex injections in June. The pain/ache is really a problem. I was just wondering if any others in this forum are experiencing the same. It produces erections within 5-10 minutes, but after intercourse, the pain lasts about 3 hours. I read where some use Tri-Mix...not sure what that is, but wonder if it too causes the pain.

Re: Injections after Prostatectomy

Hello, doj! I had rrp about 26 months ago and have not had much guidance from my uro re: regaining my ability to have erections. Someone recommended a book titled "Beyond Viagra". It is written by Dr. Alfred Newman, a urologist located in Montgomery, AL. I found the book online by doing a search as follows: "Beyond Viagra by Dr. Alfred Newman". (My search turned up many items with the title "Beyond Viagra", so you'll need to specify the author as well as the title. This book is a valuable source of all kinds of information regarding erectile dysfunction. It addresses all of the injections: 1.) tri-mix (and what constitutes tri-mix: papaverine, phentalomine, and alprostadil); 2.)papaverine (only); and, 3.)a combination of papaverine-phentolamine combination. Of course, there is also alprostdil (Edex). I have recently obtained a prescription for papaverine, and don't yet have a good or bad report. I do have a report on the book. It's absolutely great. It's the best source of info I've found on Erectile Dysfunction. It has given me hope!!!

Re: Injections after Prostatectomy

Thanks for your reply. I've read a good deal about the three options you mentioned. I'll be interested in knowing your results of the papaverine as far as pain is concerned. I've not talked to my uro about options other than Edex. I do want to ask him about the others. From what I've read, some find that the papervine alone doesn't work, others do fine and have no pain with it, while someone else finds that it's just as painful as Edex. I'm not sure why one person will have the painful reaction while another will not.

Are you still not able to have erections after 26 months? I was hoping that it would not take that long, though my uro said it can take up to 18 months, and that I'll always have to have some help from Viagra or Cialis. That would be fine, I just don't want to have to use the injections for the long term if I can't find one that is less painful.

Thanks again for your response.

Re: Injections after Prostatectomy

Hi Doj, I'm in pretty much the same situation as you but I have been using the tri mix for about 18 months. I get 2 small vials and keep 1 in the freezer until it is needed to help lengthen its shelf life. The injections work good for me but I know the soreness and tendeness you mention but this seems to be getting less as time goes on. I had my lrp 21 months ago and am having very little natural erection. You didn't mention if you were having any erection problems prior to surgery. I was using a 25ml of viagra broken in half. I have heard if you had erection problems prior to sugery you more likley to be impetent post surgery. It's strange but some injections go very smooth and sometimes the pain almost makes you buckle at the knees. A little trick I learned is to press something from the freezer against the injection site to numb it a little. This takes away some of the discomfort. So keep up the injections and I am sure it will improve with time not to mention I am sure your wife really appreciates everything you are doing. Afterall, I'm sure she has been through a lot just going through this with you. Got more questions? Please ask. Burmashave

Re: Injections after Prostatectomy

Yes...I'm approaching 27 months now, and Mr.Perky is still in hiding, although my uro assured me that he "spared the nerves". I've have a VED and it has been the only thing that's worked for me. Last month, I tried Muse, and it did nothing for me. Have also tried Levitra and Cialis. I have a number of Viagra tablets left over from when they used to work for me, and lately, I've been taking one each night before bedtime, hoping that eventually my "nerves" would awaken. I discussed this with my Uro, who is a specialist in ED, and he was in agreement that it might work. I'll wake up during the night, and find that a difference has occurred. It's a little larger, but not sufficiently large/erect to allow penetration. (Oddly enough, when I take one at night, it does seem that I feel better physically the next morning.) I do have a very strong feeling, however, that once the injections start working, my natural nerves will catch on and begin to do their work again. Thank goodness there are a continuing list of options, i.e. other injection mixtures, and as a last resore, a penile implant. I'll post more re: papaverine once I've given it a full try. Today, I looked at a video of a doctor "installing" on those devices on the internet today, and while people who have them are really pleased with them, it doesn't look like a picnic. Joy to the world! At least we're past PCA!!!
