Penile injections, husband nervous.

Husband had radical prostatectomy several months back. It was a nerve-sparing surgery. He'd never had any trouble at all with erections, and although he very quickly and fully recovered his urinary continence post-surgery, the erections have been another story.

The erections have very slowly been improving, but the "best" has still been about 60% of what he'd had before, and that's with the help of Viagra. (Cialis didn't work for him.) We know that the post-surgery recovery (if it happens) of erections can take up to maybe two years, but it's also possible that what he has now is as much has he'll get without more help.

Doc today suggested he start on penile injections. Doc said that there's a high success rate (can achieve erection) with the injections, but husband is very worried/queasy about prospect of injecting himself in the penis.

Can anyone add input to this? Have you had to do this? Success? Anyone very worried pre-injection, and then had it go well? Any response appreciated. Thanks much.

Re: Penile injections, husband nervous. Your experience?

My husband used the injections for a year to treat ED. He said that he hardly felt the needle at all. After the first few times, it was very easy with no pain. The treatments really helped a lot and, after about a year or so, he was able to stop them and just use Viagra instead.

Thanks so much! I'll pass that on to my husband. I'm sure that he will appreciate hearing about your husband's experience. Thank you.

Tell him not to worry. I have been using them for a month or so and because there are very few nerves at the bottom of the shaft where you inject, there is almost no feeling. Just a thud ( I use a spring loaded injector) and no pain at all. I stay rock hard f or 2 hours or more. you will love it, too

Did your hub's Doc mention what he was going to use for injections? Caverject? Trimix? Bimix? People who are sensitive (pain) to Alprostadil(PGE-1) might need to go Tri or Bi to get less or none of it.

Also the doc's office (and any pharmacy you get the prescription from) is likely to give you free 29 gauge syringes. That is on the large size these days and thus would give a little more pain. Look around for some 30 or 31 gauge diabetic syringes. You can get a hundred for 15 or 20 bucks. I use a 30 and those are really nice. Not sure what goes with an auto-injector if that is what you end up with..

Success rate can easily be 100% (or more!) with injections (it is for me). But it is a very individualized thing and can take a few tries to get to that reliable rate.

Might also think about him using a pump of some sort (on off days or even to stretch things a bit on the day of injects). I use the pump every day -- just rehabbing not for sex) and do the injects about every other day. So far so good with that.

Hope yous have some fun soon...

Thanks so much for your response! We don't yet know which med the doc is thinking of for the injections, but now we'll know more about what to ask.

Thanks very much to you (Rbbb), to Miket218, and to Piano for your replies. All three responses have been very informative, and very helpful. I'm printing them out, and will keep them. We're grateful! Thanks

Re: Penile injections, husband nervous. Your experience?

I have been injecting myself for 18 months with 100% success. I had a triple bypass 6 years ago and slowly realized after the surgery that my erections would not remain hard enough for penetration. I could ejaculate whether hard or not. I went to a urologist that specializes in sexual issues and he said I wasn't getting sufficient blood flow and said I could have a penile implant or injections.

I remember the nurse showing me how to do it and thought I would die. Thank god I visited my doctor. My wife and have the best sex life and the shot only hurts thinking about it. 5 minutes afterwards I am rock hard and can have sex for 1 hour or more.

Re: Penile injections, husband nervous. Your experience?

I've used the injections for over 10 years with great success. Remember that the injection site is at the base of the penis, so there aren't any really sensitive nerves there. The needle is a small diabetic needle and feels like a "pinch". I was able to feel fully confident in my abilities after using an injection.
Just be careful not nick a vein as it leads to a very ugly bruise and is uncomfortable. I won't be able to use them any more because I've been placed on Coumadin. I will miss them.

Re: Penile injections, husband nervous. Your experience?

Thanks so much for your response. I appreciate it! We've done the injections a few times at home now. Since husband is so traumatized by the concept, I'm injecting him. It's not easy for me, but it's less traumatizing for me than for him. It helps me to read the words of someone who's on the receiving end of the injections. Helps me to not be so scared when "shooting"!

Thanks much for your response. Good luck with the Coumadin. I'm well-acquainted. You'll adjust. Thanks again.

HI

Tell your husband that trimix injections are a god send. I first tried the self injection pump but i prefer to control the injection myself. Although it is a little scary sticking a needle in your penis, the results are well worth it. After practice the success rate is close to 100 percent with the best longest lasting sex you ever had. You might regret that he can stay up for an hour....

Re: Penile injections, husband nervous. Your experience?

HI
Tell your husband to try trimix injections. These injections are nearly pain free and once you learn how about 100 percent effective. I really love them as does my wife. I wear her out most of the time which does great things for the male fragile ego. There is a self injector, but I prefer to do it myself because you can tell you have the right spot by how easy the shot goes in. Mine works for over an hour.

Re: Penile injections, husband nervous. Your experience?

Thank you so much for your response. I really appreciate your taking the time to read and reply.

We started with the injections over the summer. Husband is still too freaked out by the thought of injecting himself in the penis, so (gulp) I'm doing the injections for him. It's mentally pretty hard for me to do it, so I really try not to think about it. (I've been injecting myself daily for 9 years for a medical condition, so it's easier for me face than it is for him.)

We're happy with the results, and while it would be nice if we didn't have to rely on anything than pure nature, there's no denying that the shots work great. And he's cancer-free as a result of his surgery, so that's the most important thing. Being able to regain potency with help? That's a great trade-off for his health.

Thanks to all for your response.

Re: Penile injections, husband nervous.

Good luck to you. You'll be fine. My husband had his surgery the same month you did (1/11), and he, too, has since had no spontaneous erections. He had no trouble before that; his surgery was at age 52. And the injections work just fine for him. The only hurdle for him with the injections is psychological (not to say that that is insignificant), but since I do the injections instead of him, it's mostly not an issue for him.

My bet is that you'll be very pleased. All the best to you!
