is there a relationship between erectile dysfunction and heart problems?

Somewhere I had read or heard that both conditions are related.

I don't think the conditions in themselves are a problem, but if you are taking any medication for your heart, then E.D. can very well be caused by them.

I think the connection you are thinking of is in poor circulation. If you have clogged arteries that might limit your blood flow for getting an erection.

Usually a man who smokes, for example, can have more circulatory problems and may also have a higher risk for heart disease too. But that is not to say that if you only had some erectile problems that it must be a circulatory problem that might have greater consequences like a heart attack. It is possible to have an erectile problem because of lack of testosterone or a zinc deficiency or some other problem unrelated to circulation or cardio heath.

But if there were other signs of heart disease and erectile problems then the erectile problems may be related to poor circulation. That's possible.

For me, I've found that when I'm in shape (through jogging or indoor cycling) my erections are much stronger and last longer.

Often, yes. If you aren't getting erections during your sleep, or morning erections, or have noticed a real change in the quality of your erections during masturbation (since sometimes there are relationship issues that can affect erections with a partner), then you should definitely see your doctor. Erectile dysfunction can be one of the earliest signs of other health issues. Best to get it checked out and be sure :-)

Sparkleflower is right on the mark. Narrowing or constriction of the arteries that lead to the penis typically mean that the arteries that nourish the heart are also experiencing constriction. During a physical, doctors are concerned about ED in part because it's typically a sign of cardio-vascular issues as well. Any number of articles in health magazines have discussed this issue.
