19 yr old with erection problems

Hi. I'm only 19 years old and I'm having some problems with my erections.

I was seeing this girl a couple months back and I would find myself unable to keep or maintain a hard erection when we tried to have sex. For example, I would get hard, then put on the condom and get soft, or I'd only get semi-hard to begin with, not hard enough for intercourse. And I was very attracted to this girl. Before you say it must be nerves (because I was nervous), I haven't woken up with an erection in at least a year, although I used to every morning in high school. I don't think I get them at night either. This leads me to believe it's a physical cause. I don't have any other health problems, except that I'm vasovagal. I'm thinking of getting my testosterone tested. Can anyone help me out?

If you aren't getting any erections of any kind, you may want to see a urolgist to see if you are having any problems physically.

Re: 19 yr old with erection problems

some people who dont have the problem will say its nerves or you need to relax etc

but to me it sounds as if you should see your doctor and get referred to an appropriate department

the toughest bit is always the talking to doctors, but try and pluck up the courage and just go for it.

good luck

I am having the same problem and I am 20 years old. I was trying to have sex a few nights ago and everything was going great but once I put on the condom I started to get soft and could not get an erection. I have never had the problem of not being able to get an erection but since that incident I have not been able to achieve an erection and I have absolutely no sexual drive. Is this normal or should I go seek some medical help in order to see what the cause is?

Re: 19 yr old with erection problems

Update:
I got some blood tests done and my testosterone levels are fine. My DHEA levels were high however. But if anything, I read that high levels of DHEA would be better for erectile dysfunction, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

If it's not hormones, what could be the problem? Circulatory problems?

I've noticed that recently when I masterbate I get good hard erections. But I still don't get morning erections, ever, and thats what worries me the most. I've read in a lot of places that everyone is supposed to get morning erections, at least sometimes.

Looking for some help. Thanks.

You are right, not getting a morning erection is a sign of a circulatory problem. Anything, from a sports injury, to riding a bike can cause this. Damage to the blood vessels inside the perineum is a common cause, as is damage to the valve which holds the blood in the penis to make it erect. You should get thoroughly checked out by a good urologist. Sometimes, blood flow can be restored.

Re: 19 yr old with erection problems

how is blood flow restored? surgery? I can't think of any injury that would have damaged anything. sometimes when I get a hard erection it hurts a little to clench it. Maybe that's significant?

Re: 19 yr old with erection problems

Poor circulation can cause lack of sensation as well right? I think I'm having a similar problem to you except that instead of not being able to have erections (I can) I can't feel the sensations (pleasure, warm feelings, well-being, the "rush" etc...). It feels as though there's some unnatural pressure on my urethral area as well, like a "stuckness" that makes it difficult and sometimes painful to pee.

I would recommend seeing a urologist as well, I'm planning to.

Re: 19 yr old with erection problems

yeah im going to make an appointment with a urologist.

does anyone else know why i would be able to get good erections when masterbating but no morning erections and weak or short-lasting erections with women?

Re: 19 yr old with erection problems

so i went to a urologist. he said it was performance anxiety, although admittedly that didn't explain a lack of morning erections. he said he just didn't know. said i was too young for any vascular problems or something like that. he gave me a sample of viagra, and that i could use it as a "crutch" for a while until i get my confidence, and then i wouldnt need it. I have to say i was pretty disappointed. not getting any morning erections for a couple years isnt just a fluke. there must be something wrong physically, but he had no answers. i dont really know what to do.

Re: 19 yr old with erection problems

Total T being good does not necesarrily rule out hormonal problems. Your doc probably right, not likely you have circulation problems at your age. Hormonal also unusual at your age but not impossible.

For a full hormonal work up you need Total T, Free T, LH, SHBG, Estradiol, and prolactin checked at a minimum. Free T is the testosterone that is active and gives you your libido and erections. It should be 100 - 250 pg/ml.

I'm not saying you have a hormonal issue but just checking total T is not enough to rule it out.

Re: 19 yr old with erection problems

I am stumped as to why you don't get morning erections. That being said, it is obviously not a circulatory problem, if you get hard to masturbate.
This is one of those self-fulfilling prophesies. If you worry, you won't get hard, but if you get hard, you worry you might not be able to keep it. You need to find a way to get rid of the worry. Congratulations on not having a physical problem. They are much more difficult.
