Circumcision scar doesn't look good

I was circumcised in early December of 2005, due to me having a pretty serious case of phimosis. My skin isn't the best at healing, so I wasn't expecting anything perfect, but I've looked at pictures online, and my scar looks a little more "messy" than many other photos I've seen online. First of all, there are still little bumps and raised areas around the scar line. Also, on the underside, the skin is still "swelled" a little bit, at the point where the frenulum (guess the doctor didn't snip it) connects back to the skin.

I saw the doctor that did the surgery 3 weeks after and he said everything was going well. I kind of forgot about it until 3 months later, when I was starting to get concerned by the healing. My insurance switched and I moved down to college, so I saw a different doctor. He said everything was fine and that I'd have to wait around 6 months or so for the swelled areas to flatten out. I kind of forgot about it again but in recent weeks I've started to become sexually active and more self concious of the appearance.

It does appear that the swelled areas continue to reduce in side, but it seems the process is going so slow and will take a year or more for decent looking results. I have an appointment scheduled again now, but I was hoping I could get some feedback. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Should I just wait longer, or will I have to have some kind of scar revision surgery?

Re: Circumcision scar doesn't look good

The scar line doesn't look too bad when the penis is erect. The little bumps and the swelling on the bottom get stretched somewhat flat, it looks failry decent. But when flaccid, the scar and bumps are pretty visible, and the entire scar line almost folds up a little bit so it sticks out just a bit.

Re: Circumcision scar doesn't look good

Hi tr3000,

I was circumcised back in March 2004 and what you describe is EXACTLY what I experienced with my scar. It seems that for some guys the scar does go through a porlonged period of lumpiness. This can take as long as two or three years to resolve completely.

I have just passed the two-year mark and I recently went back to see my surgeon because I was concerned that there were still too many unresolved issues with my scar. He recommended using a hrdrocortisone cream (a quite weak dosage) for about three weeks. I would say it has had an effect in smoothening the scar and making it much thinner. But this must not be used over a prolonged period as hydrocortisone thins the skin and makes it vulnerable to damage.

I too have considered a revision to remove the scar tissue, but the problem with that is you could end up with another equally thick scar which might take the same time to resolve. As you are only six months into your healing I would say you should be patient and wait at least another six months before making a decision. It is probably even better to wait till you pass the two-year mark.

Hope this message may offer some encouragement.

Re: Circumcision scar doesn't look good

As these are effectively still healing wounds it is important to make sure you wear a condom for all sex until it is fully healed - this can take a long time.

With regards to the scar I was listening to the radio here today and somebody talked about a cream that was brill at reducing scarring - maybe a web search would help. It may have been some sort of vitamin cream??
