Penis suspensory ligament

I tore my suspensory ligament 7 years ago. In spite of what many urologists may say, this is a real problem that has been noted in the literature, along with a technique for surgical repair. I have seen a doctor who was one of the pioneers of the repair procedure. Some urologists that know about this problem will mention the instability at the base that results from such a tear, but not the ED. The ED likely results at least in part from disrupting the venous occlusion mechansim. When the ligament is stretched during erection, pressure is placed on the dorsal vein that runs through the ligament reducing venous outflow. I personally think that the pull of the ligament on the penis itself also contributes to erection. Sort of like when you flex the PC muscles that attach to the penis and the penis gets harder while you flex. It simply adds pressure to the corpora cavernosum. Anyway, I am 27 now and have not had the surgery. I was worried about having a penis with no flexibility at all due to the sutures used and subsequent scar tissue. I also know that the artificial ligament produced by the scar tissue and sutures is unlikely to have the same venous occlusion function of the natural ligament.

<I have read> that some individuals who have had continued ED following the surgery were treated with additional venous ligation which resolved residual symptoms. However, I know from my research that ligations seldom work for more than 2 years due to the formation of collateral vasculature, and the authors did not perform any long term follow up for these or any other patients. Finally, I am simply scared of having a knife down there making things worse.

I have used viagra since the incident with reasonable success, but the viagra is not working as well as it used to. I think that the fact that I was only 20 years old and had an extremely healthy penis when the injury occurred allowed things to work decently for a time, but now that I am getting older the effects of the damaged ligament are becoming more pronounced. Anyway, I am reconsidering surgery and will likely see another prominent urologist with knowledge of the problem in California when I am there this coming summer.

I would like to help others with this problem understand their options, as well as hear from anyone who may have had the surgery or other treatments. I know all too well from personal experience that many doctors are simply not knowledgeable enough about this issue to discuss it. I also know that many excellent physicians who do have an understanding are not good at discussing options with their patients, or they simply dont care to.

Anyway I look forward to hearing from some of you.

Thanks,

John

Re: Penis suspensory ligament

John,

I have either a torn suspensory ligament, or one so stretched it might as well be. I am in CA. Can you tell me the name of the Dr. who you are going to visit, as I would like to speak with a Dr. who has expertise in this area.

Thanks.

Re: Penis suspensory ligament

Hi John, i think that i have the same problem, i damaged mine over 10 years ago but have never seen a doctor. I am now at the point where i need to try and get this corrected. I dont get any kind of resistance from my penis even when aroused (by this i mean that if i push my penis down when erect it will not push back), because of this my erections are not very strong. I have noticed that just above my penis at the base it feels as though there is a hole or tear in the muscle tissue.

Please keep us updated with any treament you have, or any new information you discover. The only info i seem to find is people who want to get it cut as a form of enlargement and not much information on the repair of it.

Re: Penis suspensory ligament

i know i've got this problem from rough sex with my girl over a year ago where there was a pop, pain, blood, and then floppy, inconsistent erections, i know i'm not getting back to my old self and all the local urologists tell me is that it must be in my head or it will heal with time. I'm pretty much at the end of my rope and would be on the next plane to california if i just had the name of a doctor who might know something about this.
