Testicle Infection...Really Bad!

I got a boil on my left testicle in June. It devolped & drained like a normal boil without lancing. Month latter another appeared a little larger but otherwise them same. About 3 weeks and got another one on the right side again about 1" diameter and on the surface. About 3weeks after that both sides at the same time but larger, approx. 3" each with a common drain at the base of my testicles.

In Spet the Doctor put me on Augmentin 650mg. Finished 10day prescription and four days latter I grew another one on both sides about 4" each and this time my penis swelled. another 10days of Augmentin 875mg and it drained thru the common drain area that had formed before. 2weeks after meds another on both sides but larger and again in my penis, and the Doctor took one look and said
" There ain't no pill gonna cure that one!" <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">
Ya I'm laughing too.

The wife also has been getting small boils next to her virgina and never had a problem with boils before.

I'm 50 and also have RSD on my left side and have maybe five boils over my life time.

In the hospital that day for 8days of IV antibiotic, Primaxin 100mg 3x day. I was seen by a Urgiloigist(sp) and a Infectious Diease Doc. Cat-scan, ultrasound, TB, cultures, urine work up, all negitive.

I been on Augmentin 875mg 2x daily for 2 weeks and will be until January.

That was two weeks ago and tonite I find the start of another one on the left side.

The only thing we did different this year was we camped for 4 months in the back country, drank carbon filtered water from good streams and lakes and ate trout. Besides that we had our regular diet.

Any ideas of what the Doctors are missing? Or what were doing/did wrong?
Any ideas of what kind of specialist I need to see next?

I've got to get this nipped in the "johnson".

Well, if the problem still presists maybe you should consider trying a different doctor!
Sometimes it takes a different pair of eyes to see the problem.
Good Luck

I agree. Also, was your doctor a urologist? If not, see a urologist-- he/she may have more relevent experience with what you describe. Good luck-- sound uncomfortable!

Re: Testicle Infection...Really Bad!

It could be a venereal bacterial disease like lymphogranuloma venereum. It can cause boil-like eruptions that come back again and again. Did your doc mention that?

Re: Testicle Infection...Really Bad!

Hi kiel,
Yes i'm considering another Doc. But I have seen three already, my Internist, a Urogolist and a Infectous Diease Doc

Hi wearesiamese,
Yes a tad nerve racking I think more from not knowing whats causing it than from pain.

Hi foosballfan,
Went and did some research on what you suggested but it just doesn't sound like what I have. All the lab reports are negitive other than common bacteria. The Doctors assure me that the meds will handle anything I've got, ya right, then why do I still have it!

the Doctor put me on Ceftin 1000mg/day. That has kept it in check but didn't shrink it or make it go away.

Now I'm on Levaquin 500mg/day and thats starting to make it smaller. I doubled the dose for the first couples days and then I knew I was taking too much so cut back.

Doctor said surgery is next. thats why I doubled the dosage. I don't like to start cuttin on something they don't what it is or what caused it.

Thanks all for the help!

Re: Testicle Infection...Really Bad!

Levaquin is a once a day medication so do not double dose on this drug. It is dangerous to change the dose of any medication without first checking with your doctor or pharmacist. One other thing you need to consider is that you say your wife has these boils too. She also needs to be treated and you need to use a condom with sex so that you don't spread this any more than you already have. Boils are usually caused by the staph bacteria which is easily spread so you need to be sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water any time you touch the area where the boils are. Also if there is any drainage at all be sure that your clothes are washed in hot enough water to kill the bacteria if any drainage gets on your clothes. I am assuming that one of the three doctors have cultured the drainage and have told you what bacteria is causing these boils. If not that is the first step in knowing what antibiotic to use that will cure the infection. Hope some of this is helpful to you

Re: Testicle Infection...Really Bad!

Hi mlgable,

Yes you are very correct that dosages should not be altered. In this case I felt safe in doing so and I should have said that I took 500mg 2x/day.

Yes the wife is on Augmenton 875mg/day. We thought we had a problem passing this between us but the Doctor didn't agree totally. We have taken precautions tho.

Yes they did culture but nothing abnormal came back, Stapth A, e-coli and ? but Doc said it common and nothing unusul.

any other suggestions?

Re: Testicle Infection...Really Bad!

Staph A is common but is easily spread. Staph is the germ that causes pimples and boils etc. which as you know is why they say not to pick at your pimples when you are a teen as that can spread it. I would do some searching on the web for info on treatments for staph infections since I am under the impression that you usually use something like Tetracycline or Doxicycline for these types of infections. I had really bad roseaca with nasty huge spots of acne on my face which why I am aware of what drugs are used for this type of infection. You may want to ask the doc if he did a sensitivity of the culture. That is where they test to see what antibiotics your drainage was most sensitive to and which ones it is resistant to. Keeping the area clean with a good antibacterial soap and water wash twice daily and making sure you wash your hands well is still the only suggestions I have at this time. You may want to try some tea tree oil on these boils for a while and see if that helps at all. If I think of anything else I will gladly post it since I know these are no fun for you. The acne on my face was bad enough. Good Luck.

Re: Testicle Infection...Really Bad!

Hi mike,

Did you ever find out just what caused your rash? and hows the treatment going? What are you using for it?

I do remember when the wife would get yeast infections that some times I would also get the itching from it and would use some of her 7 day medicene that would knock it down.

This however is not quick responding to any of the major anti-bioitocs. The best so far has been the IV Primaxin but as soon as I stopped the IV's the problem came back alittle. So for now I'm going to take the Levaquin and hope I can get buy without the surgery.

Re: Testicle Infection...Really Bad!

I'm taking oral antifuguals and using a cream. I have felt better on these meds than I have in a long time, but it has not gone away. I am starting I diet today, trying to stay way from sugars and fats (the stuff that feeds it). I am still hurting, still can not have sex, but mentially a little better.

Re: Testicle Infection...Really Bad!

Hi All,

Thought I'd give you a update on what I've found out so far on my infection. I have been fighting this infection for the past 9 months.

Update on the medications I've tried after the Augmentin.
Ceftin 500mg 2x/day with no postive results after 14days
Levaquin 500mg 1x/day, will somewhat control the infection but I getting immune to this antibiotic.

I think I found out what my problem is called,
Hidradenitis Suppurativa another disease with little hope of getting rid of it. Now I understand why I have been having such a hard time trying to get rid of the infection. I still have no idea of how I got this stuff other than it seams to come with other exisiting medical problems which I have.

I'm learning more each day about HS. So far it's start cutting until they hit fresh meat then skin graft over. In my case that would mean I would end up with "bags" which is not acceptable to me!

HS does not repond well to antibiotics as they seam to mask the infection and with-in a short time, few days, the infection is back as it never went away.

There's several things I'm going to try on my own.
A massive dose of antibiotics of my choice along with heavy Epson salt/alcohol compress and hyperbarric chamber treatments. They've been using hyperbarric chamber treatments with diabetes lesions thats working well on some people.

The best info came from the Dept of Dermatology at the U of Iowa.

I've included a link to images of HS but be warned these are not for the faint of heart. The pics might also make a young person think about where they put there genitals or with whom as they can see some not so plesent results. I've been to alot of websites on HS and alot of people have this disease all there life.

Re: Testicle Infection...Really Bad!

Just out of curiousity have you tried using tea tree oil aka melaleuca oil on the area for a length of time? This stuff has some amazing results on lots of chronic problems and might be worth a try since nothing else seems to be helping. Do a search for either of those two names and see what pops up or you should be able to get it at your local health store. Also since you have this infection/sore be sure you are getting enough vitamin C which also helps aide in healing of wounds. Good Luck.
