Does anyone know any ways to look after your prostrate gland ?
My dad suffers with his, and I don't want to have to go thru the same thing. What food should I avoid?, what food should I eat ?
I'm 30 years old, 170lbs, physically fit, and eat 'fairly' well, non smoker. What else can I do ?
Any help much appreciated
I'm not really sure but I will say that I have heard it is important as we age that we continue to regularly release semen through sex or masturbation. This is really meant for "senior citizens" who often become less sexually active. Keeping the prostate active tends to reduce the risk of prostate cancer and such. I've heard that some diet stuff helps, but can' recall off the top of my head what specifically is best.
Unfortunately, doctors still don't know much about the prostate and what causes problems with the prostate. But as lance said, one theory (and its only a theory at this point) is regular ejaculations help keep a prostate healthy.
As for what diet is best for a prostate, again we have only theories. The safest bet of course is a healthy balanced diet. Supposedly smoking and heavy drinking can cause prostate inflamation in older men, but not sure about younger men (under 50).
A recent theory is that Zinc is good for the prostate, since the prostate fluid that is ejaculated is very rich in zinc. Although they are not sure why. One possibility is that the zinc is used by the prostate to fight off infection. Zinc can be found in most multivitamins, and in shellfish.
It's amazing that with all the medical technology we have today, we really don't know much at all about the prostate.
So until we know more, my advice for a healthy prostate is: 1) exercise it by ejaculating frequentyly (that's always fun anyway), 2) eat a balanced healthy diet, 3) stay away from smoking and heavy drinking, 4) exercise and stay fit, and 5) take a multivitamin daily that contains zinc.
Here are some food recommendations. If you don't like any of these foods or want more, let me know.
Lycopene: tomatoes and tomato products.
Vitamin E: sunflower seeds.
Selenium: Tuna (also sunflower seeds).
Zinc: Total cereal (which also contains a bunch of other minerals and vitamins).
Omega-3s: salmon (among some other cold water dark flesh fish).
Soy: they have soy everything nowadays.
Drinks: water is best.
A multi-vitamin is a good idea. There are plenty to choose from. I take GNC Men's Mega Men, which contains Vitamin E, selenium, lycopene, zinc, and saw palmetto, all of which are supposed to help the prostate. (My only complaint about this vitamin: the taste.) Reduce meat, sugar/simple carbs, and egg yolks. Increase fish, fruit, vegetable, and whole grain intake. Exercise regularly and reduce stress.
[This message has been edited by Shane (edited 09-08-2001).]
Thanks for some graet advice there.
I do eat well, and take omega 3 suppliments, multivits and tomato products. I will also make sure I get some of the other things you listed, as I do want to keep my prostarte healthy (and as far as masturbation goes... no fear of forgetting to do that regularly )
