Post Embarassing STD test

Recently I went to the hospital ER. I thought that I had a urinary track infection. I had some pain and had had this before. I figured that I would have a unrinalysis, get some antibiotics, and be on my way. I explained my symptoms to the attending physician. He asked a lot of personal questions.I assured him that I had only been with my wife and she with me, married for several years.
He made me get undressed and get into a johnny after the
urinalysis. I found this odd, but cooperated. He made me bend over and gave me a prostate exam. He then made me lie on the bed, pulled up my johnny, pulled back my foreskin and proceeded to insert test probes into me.
This was rather painful and embarassing. Of course the
STD tests came back negative. I wonder if this is routine, or was he doing unecessary testing and probing?

Has anyone else ever had this experience? It was just a
slight infection. I didn't even need an antibiotic. He
recommended aspirin and plenty of fluids. Tell me what you think of this. Thank you.

I would say this was routine for your exam since your urinalysis was only slightly positive. You had complained of pain so he was only doing his job to make sure there wasn't some other underlying cause of your pain. I would give this doc a pat on the back for taking your symptoms seriously. I would consider that next time unless your symptoms are severe or it is a weekend go to your local doc in the morning or use the urgent care instead of ER. Since you seem prone to UTI's you should be sure to drink plenty of fluids every day and include lots of cranberry juice or take cranberry capsules to help prevent these. You might also consider adding extra vitamin C to your daily routine too. Also I am assuming you were dressed in an examination gown as I had no clue what a johnny was. Union suits I know about but not johnnies.

Believe it or not it is pretty rare for a man to have a urinary tract infection. They are very common in women because the anus and the urinary opening are very close together. So if she wipes back to front instead of front to back the urinary opening is then contaminated and so on. But with a man their anatomy is different so it is not as easy for a man to get an UTI. When a man does present with s/s of UTI's then the first thing that come to the docs mind, is exactly where has he been "dipping" his penis. That is the reason for all of the other tests. I've been a nurse for many years and it is still pretty standard procedure to do all of the STD testing when a man comes in with UTI symptoms.

It was all probably part of a normal exam, but he was probably a little ticked that you went to the EMERGENCY ROOM for a very minor urinary tract infection...
