Unhappy rash on head of penis? HELP!!!

I've had a strange rash on the head of my penis for some time now. It's not there all the time, it comes and goes. It starts off as small red spots and then turns into slightly bigger blotchy red patches. Then i get what looks like a little dead or dry skin on the head before it goes away.

I'm uncircumsised, and i'm sure it isn't an STD...

Any ideas?

Cool

Almost certainly "Thrush" (Candida Albicans), and of course women quite often suffer from it as you might know.

You can use an anti-fungal treatment such as Clotrimazole (Canesten, Lotremin) or Miconazole (Daktarin, Monistat IIRC), or you can simply use some "waterproofing" - I recommend Zinc and Caster Oil - the white, sticky "Nappy" ("Diaper") cream that is sold for use on babies. Very cheap, non-irritating, effective and you get used to any funny (white) mess.

What causes this? Is there any way to prevent it?

The cause is the yeast, and it's pretty much always there to some degree.

What it's all about then, is whether for some reason it really "gets a go on" and multiplies more than normal. One reason it may do so is diabetes, in which case you can have sugar in your urine, which the yeast feeds on, so you should have your blood sugar (not just a urine test) checked by your doctor - or indeed, a diabetic mate with his "sugar meter".

The other parts of the equation, are your body's natural protective oils, and the "good bacteria" that live on the skin. Both of these can be interfered with if you use soap, or even worse, antiseptic inside the foreskin, so if you are doing that, there's your cure already! The medications I pointed out, and the Zinc and Caster Oil, interfere much less with the natural "environment".

And you need to avoid tight pants and/ or synthetic underwear. It need not surprise you that all these comments apply to girls as well.
