Fruits of the rose family--including cherries, apples, plums, almonds, peaches, apricots, and crabapples--contain in their seeds substances known as cyanogenetic glycosides, which on ingestion release hydrogen cyanide gas through an enzymatic reaction. A little probably won't do you in, but you don't want to effectively ingest a bunch of cyanide.
Cyanide is a very poisonous chemical. Exposure to high levels of cyanide harms
the brain and heart, and may cause coma and death.
