I would find a different doctor. There has to be a hormone imbalance if you are not getting your periods. I wouldn't say it is a sign of infertility just yet, but it certainly isn't going to help once you do try to become pregnant.
There can be many reasons for lack of periods, namely polycystic ovarian syndrome where the egg fails to mature each month, or it could be just stress.
Sometimes, all you need is a few months on the pill to get you regulated and that might help. Definitely ask for some bloodwork done so your doctor will see where your hormones are at.
It's not unusual to skip periods, but 5-6 mos. between them is quite a bit.
