yeah definitely try a different angle. i had the same problem as you for about two years, actually. you just have to point it in the right direction. the way i think of it is keep it against the upper edge, more toward your stomach as opposed to your back. if you stay to that side it will hurt less and kind of be a guide.
you might want to try a plastic or satin applicator with a rounded tip. those are much easier/more comfortable to insert. although, i started out using just cardboard with no rounded tip, and i'm glad i did because now i'm used to it. but if it's just too hard for you, use the more comfy kind the first few times, and then work your way up to the other kind. see, you'll want to be able to use both kinds, otherwise if you don't have a tampon on you and all the vending maching/your friends have are the non-rounded cardboard, you'll be in trouble. oh, and make sure it's in as far as it can go. you shouldn't feel a thing after you take out the applicator. if you do, it's not in far enough.
