It can take between a two weeks to a month. Most doctors prefer for the person to be taking them for a month before not using any other protection. But even then unless you are ready to deal with an unplanned pregnancy you need to keep using condoms even after the pill has become effective. The reason I say this is because the pill can and does fail for no reason at all at times. Other times it can fail due to the person not taking it correctly or being on other meds that can effect it. By you continuing to use condoms while your partner is on the pill you give the added protection to cover those slip ups and such.
Better safe than sorry.
