Question SWITCHING BIRTH CONTROL PILLS

I have been on Ortho Tri Cyclen for 3 years but I think it has been causing mood swings b/c of the different hormone levels. I am on my week with inactive pills and about to start a new pill called Yasmin on Friday. Does anyone know if I need to use a backup method if I have sex, or does the new pill take a month or so to become effective?

I highly doubt you need to use a backup method but better safe than sorry, neh?

I have recently switched from Marvelon to Triquilar, and I asked my doc if I need a back up method as well! Here is the answer:

When finished your last pack of old pills, do not wait a week to have your period before beginning the new ones (Yasmin, in your case)!

So, take your last Ortho-Tricyclen or whatever and then start Yasmin the very next day. You might get some breakthrough bleeding since your body usually has a period at this time, but doc assured me that I am just as protected as always when switching!

Even if you waited to have that period, it'd just be like any other month, you're still fully protected!

Hope this helps!

Thank you both for your responses! I have another question, recently I read online that these 5 Dutch women supposedly had blood clots related to the Yasmin, and it really scares me!! Does anyone know if this is a myth??
