Were you using a different kind of tampon, maybe? Like maybe you are used to plastic applicators, but this new one was cardboard or no applicator? I've always found that cardboard or non-applicator tampons are more difficult to insert than plastic.
Also, perhaps you weren't flowing heavily enough for it to be a smooth insertion? Being dryer would make it much more difficult.
I bet it wouldn't hurt though, to call your doctor and see if they can't take a quick look for you. And also, since you struggled so much with that one tampon, they can check for tears and irritation, anyway, as long as you're there!
