headache with orgasm

Just recently, I has happened 3 times, I have experienced severe headache just before orgasm. It begins high on the left side of my neck, and then the pain is almost explosive over the top of my head.
I am 47 and this has never happened before. I am embarrased to ask my doctor, particularly as it has occured when masturbating.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: headache with orgasm

This happened to me last year, and let me tell you, I was terrified. I thought for sure I was having some kind of stroke or aneurism (spelling?). I first experienced this while masturbating, and boy was it embarassing explaining it to my husband. Several more times I felt a headache starting during sex and had to stop. The thought of seeing a doctor was also terrifying.

I did some research and it turns out this is more common than you may think. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name for this, but there is a specific name for an orgasm induced headache. Here is what I do remember learning about this topic:

It is more common in men than women. These are generally harmless, although there is a very slight risk this may be a sign of a serious problem. They are kinda related to a migraine. A type of these also occurs in athletes lifting heavy weights. There are many theories about what causes these, including changing blood pressure in the head and chemicals in the brain. The good news is these generally go away after a couple weeks as suddenly as they came on. In my case, they did go away after a couple weeks and I have not experienced them again.

So just hang in there and hopefully they will go away on their own. If they do not go away after some time, I would recommend swallowing your fear and seeing a doctor to rule out more serious problems. Take comfort in knowing this happens to other people too. Another thing you can do is keep researching about this, the Internet is a great resource. (I am the type of person who NEEDS to learn as much as possible about things like this, and learning helps alleviate fears). I hope this has helped you, because I remember how scary and embarassing this was for me. I wish you the best of luck, take care!
