i don't know about the bacterial infections, but they do help with prevent yeast infections. My gyneocologist told me to take them since i don't really like yogurt, and that it would help. I cannot answer for everyone, but i've had good luck with taking them.

They cannot give you an infection, because they contain only "good" bacteria, the kind that we need more of in our digestive tracts. They could potential help prevent BOTH yeast and bacterial infections. Taking them can't harm you, but you may have side effects (bloating, gas, etc.) when you first start taking them, but this should subside within a week or two (and most people have no side effects). You could take a capsule each day as a preventative or just load up (maybe two casules twice each day) when you feel an infection might be coming on. Always take separately from antibiotics.

They are the kind of bacteria that normally grow in the stomach.

Sometimes they are killed off & some people have digestive problems. They take the pills to help the bacteria to get started again in the stomach.

No worries,

I couldn't survive without them but I do disagree with a previous post. When you feel an infection coming on it's too late to start taking the acidophilis. It usually won't help. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure my Grandma always said. Just take one every day and you won't have to worry about it. And don't rely on the cheap Wal-Mart ones either. I get mine from GNC and they have to be refrigerated. The cheaper ones don't. The are cheaper than all those infection medicines so I consider them well worth the price.
