Re: For those who've been having painful sex!! I went to a specialist...

I definitely think this is what I have. I have painful sex or even the slightest touch is uncomforting. I don't enjoy sex and it's very frustrating. I'm thinking about going to the doctor for a UTI that I recently got. And I tend to get alot of yeast infections. Does this disease cause that also? It's very painful and I wish I had more people to talk to. If anyone wants to e-mail me so we can talk a bit more easily, my email is [ please read and follow the posting rules - no emails ]

Re: For those who've been having painful sex!! I went to a specialist...

How is everyone going with diagnosis and treatment?

I'm now on a low-dose antidepressant that in such low doses is supposed to help cure the nerve pain that causes it to hurt during sex. I have to take it for a long time and slowly up the dosage till I feel a difference. Wish me luck!

I hope you are all finding the causes for your pain and are being treated appropriately?

Tyger.

Re: For those who've been having painful sex!! I went to a specialist...

The pain was gone for about 2 days, until I got my period and afterward, I had a yeast infection type pain, itch, and burn. I have a doctor's appt today so I can finally get all this straightened out. I used monostate 1 (sp?) but it really didn't help much. So hopefully this will get resolved. Good luck with your medications!

Gah! This explains almost every attempted..and I mean attempted sexual experience I have had. Well almost, I have attempted to have sex but the pain is unbearable. I don't get it. I have heard of having sex for the first time being painful and such but this is like crying, huddled in a corner pain. I think I may have what you have described. I will go to my doctor and definately ask, cause I am quite concerned. Thank you for your post.

Re: For those who've been having painful sex!! I went to a specialist...

I have a few questions about this topic. about 2 weeks ago I went to see the doctor and had a pap smear and they said I have abnormal cells in my test results. But I also have pain during sex and I think I may have a yeast infections. I also have a hard time using tampons and do get some irritation at times. What would you suggest I do to get rid of it and what do I tell my doctor?

Re: For those who've been having painful sex!! I went to a specialist...

Hi deepdesire,

The abnormal cells are the most important thing to focus on first, you need to ask your doctor if they need to be burnt off or if they're ok etc. They could be cause for pain but if you're pain and irritation is more superficial (on the surface and in teh entrance of your vagina) this could be yeast. That is a seperate matter though and is treated either systemically (with an oral pill) or topically (with a cream). The doctor nneeds to swab you to test for yeast too, do not use the medication sif you are unsure that you have yeast.

Good luck! Hope i helped

Tyger.

I have Vestibulitis or vulval vestibular syndrome

Apparently this condition is COMMON, which was the last of my thoughts...its just underdiagnosed in many women. To treat it, I have been given a very low continuous dose of 'Amitriptyline' which is usually prescribed (in larger doses) as an anti-depressent. It completely fixes this condition in about 70% of cases, so my fingers are crossed...as I have had the condition for only a few months, its more likely to be fixable.
The reason for this condition is mostly to do with nerve endings... a kind of 'nerve damage' sometimes as a result of infection. Please do a websearch about this condition, or post back on this thread if you'd like me to elaborate more
My symptoms are:
- initial yeast infection (it was cleared, but I BELIEVED was still there because of the pain)
- pain during sex!! mainly penetration
- a subtle irritation day-to-day
- discomfort with tampons

It was mostly a sexual problem, and this is my most prominant symptom by far. I have no physical abnormalities in that area and no infections to speak of (apart from the initial one that kicked it all off). So if this sounds like you, post back, I'm happy to help!

Tyger.
I think I have the same thing. I went to my Dr about the same symptoms and she found nothing. But I felt there had to be something wrong, so she said it may be "nerve memory" so I left feeling it was a problem in my mind. I want to ask havethe med's started to work for you. Because I need some help, sex just isn't any fun anymore it just plain HURTS. I also take (nizoral)sp for a rash on my face. I wonder if the same condition that is on my face be affecting me down there? I would love more information if you have any. Thanks very much for the little light of hope. I see my Dr on tues and hope to get something for this, but I want to give her as much info I can to lead to some help in this area.

Re: For those who've been having painful sex!! I went to a specialist...

I would love to hear from anyone who has had pain during sex and is now taking amitriptyline. I have had this problem since my oldest child was born 9 1/2 years ago. Amitriptyline does help--but it took about 9-12 months to start helping. I just don't want to be on it forever. I also had a VERY hard time getting a diagnosis. I finally ended up in Charlotte, NC at Dr. Libby Edwards office and she gave me the amitriptyline. SHe is a specialist in this field. Again, I would love to hear from someone else.

Re: For those who've been having painful sex!! I went to a specialist...

Hi I have been dealing with some of these symptons for 3 weeks & will be going to see my PCP on Thursday.
Initially I had external itching, some redness/inflammation in vulva area. A topical vag cream seem to clear that up in 2 days but internal discomfort (at times real pain, at times ok, & some inside itchiness) just hasn't gone away. It kind of coincided with sex in the shower & I thought I had a reaction from soap. But it appears to be more than an allergic thing.
I am POST menopausal (age 52) so I understand that doesn't help, with thinning & dryness. I have used Restore cream (internally) for a week & sometimes it soothes other times causes more pain inside. (maybe the applicator) I am thinking it may be time for RX estrogen vaginal cream. ???

Well I'm sorry we all have to deal with this but it's nice to know other women have all these troubles & unanswered questions.
Hopefully I'll get a clue at my dr appointment.
Thanks.

Re: For those who've been having painful sex!! I went to a specialist...

I too have been experiencing pain since having a yeast infection a few months ago. At first they diagnosed Bacterial Vaginitis and I was given a medication (I think it was Flagyl oral). It wasn't helping so I was told to try Monistat. That seemed to help but a few days later it was back. I did another 3 day round of Monistat. Since then I have had incredible burning in the labia area. A gyno told me it might be vulva (can't remember the entire name). Having sex was out of the question . . . the burning and stinging made it impossible. I also have genital herpes and I wasn't sure if this was adding to the problem. The gyno also said it could be caused by the water and told me to wash my delicates in distilled water. I actually never did that but instead started to take note of when it was happening. It seemed to be related to sitting for a long time while wearing tight clothing, like jeans. I've started to change out of pants as soon as I get home and instead put on loose cotton PJ bottoms. It really seems to be helping. I also bought an over the counter cortisone cream and vagisil as well. The vagisil didn't seem to help but the cortisone cream definitely helped. He didn't want to give me a prescription for it because he didn't want me to use a stronger cream because I have thin vaginal skin and cortisone could cause the skin to thin even more. The cortisone cream over the counter is not as strong. It specifically said not to use it vaginally if discharge is present but I wasn't having any discharge since the yeast infection had cleared so I decided it was safe to use it. I used it for about 3 days and the burning just about disappeared and now I change into loose pj bottoms when I get home and between the two remedies, I've really seen a huge improvement.

Re: For those who've been having painful sex!! I went to a specialist...

Hey....I am 22 years old and married for over a year now. I was fine with sex and then I myself got my first yeast infection and sex hurt so so bad...the burning irritation made me want to scream..and it was so frustrating because I wanted to have sex just as much as my husband but when it kills well...that's a buzz kill. I was about to get really fed up and do something serious after the pain seemed to go on and on even after I took medicine and my infection was supposedly gone. However, I was patient..I didn't go to a vulva doctor and get diagnosed with some vestibular disorder because I knew that this pain coulddnt last forever..I mean I use to love sex..it was never painful before. After some time the pain did cease and now sex is awesome once again. I think that you just need to let the infection heal. Give it some time. Don't freak because surely if sex was good before it has to eventually get back to the way it was. Patience is virtue.

Re: For those who've been having painful sex!! I went to a specialist...

Hi everyone

Its been a while since I've posted but I thought it was about time I popped in to see how everyone's dealing. First - my status. After many months of pain, my specialist (who's treatments failed) referred me to ANOTHER specialist who's supposed to deal with these cases exclusively. Cue another 6 months or so of waiting for a damn appointment. Finally it came around. First up, he inspected me with a 'q-tip' which basically means touches around your opening and in the vagina to see which parts hurt. Yeah - that wasn't a lot of fun! After that, he told me everything i already know. 'You have vulvar vestibulitis, there's not a whole lot known about it etc etc'. Basically what my other specialist had said.

First treatment was Nizoral tablets, a strong anti-fungal, that I had taken before but 'apparently' had not taken for long enough. So I was on that to kill ALL the yeasst. You see, according to this guy, normal yeast treatments won't work because the yeast cells are *embedded* in the vaginal walls, in the skin. It is very had to get rid of. So I did my course of Nizoral, and then he started me on Amitryptiline again. Woohoo. Cue more headaches, fatigue and low moods. This time, i gave the Amytriptiline a full 6 months. I was going to give it a good effort. I upped the doseage till I reached 75mg's a day. He told me not to exceed this. ABSOLUTELY NO EFFECT.

Then came his suggestion that I go see a NEW specialist called MAREK who 'specialises in these cases and has a special physiotherapy class for it!'

Finally I clued up. None of these doctors were going to help me. They just like hand-balling me to the next one. And each time I go to a new one they pump me full of *THE SAME* drug the last one did, and wonder why it didn't work.

So I took it upon myself. I stopped sitting around on my butt being down about it. I looked up some sites and used some of the tips on there (ie. massaging the area with almond oil). I taught myself to relax during sex, and tried many positions (where possible! I had broken up with my long-term bf, so there was the added challenge of having different sized men..). I take my time during sex, and use lube where I have to. Tampons don't hurt to use now.

I am at the point where sex is now fine. The initial entry is somewhat painful, but I used to be a real drama queen about it. Now, if I concentrate on relaxing and enjoying the sensations, the pain disappears during sex. Afterwards, it doesn't really hurt at all anymore, just a bit sensative for an hour or so I guess.

I think the rumour is true - this condition disappears of its own accord over time. Its a btich that we have to deal with it, but we've got eachother to help through it. The most important thing is to first get a diagnosis! If there are specialists, go to one, and try the treatments available. Don't give up. If they don't work, don't see another specialist. Talk to the one you're with, and get them to explore more avenues of treatment. BE BOSSY! you have to make them listen, not just handball you to the next one who's not bothered with you.

Pradasweets is very correct. Patience is a virtue. Be patient, and eventually, all your christmases will come at once!

Re: For those who've been having painful sex!! I went to a specialist...

Hy Tyger: It's great to hear you're doing so well. I've found some relief from Clobetasol ointment b/c. I have Lichen Sclerosis as well as Vestibulitis. Recently, I saw a general Gyn. who gave me the most excruciating pelvic exam and pap. I was in agony for 3 weeks afterwards. I feel like I'm the only one who can't even find a decent local Gyn. let alone a good specialist. I haven't tried sex in a long time, but I know it will still hurt like hell since the pelvic exam was so painful. I've found like women Drs. are even less sympathic than men. This Dr. knew I had L.S. and Vestibulitis and still was so rough during the exam that I bled. That's never happened to me before. For now, I'm not going to bother looking for a Dr. The Clob. has gotten rid of the burning, swelling, itching. I got that RX from a Dermatologist who treats vulvar dermatoses. Unfortunately, she doesn't treat Vestibulitis though.

Re: For those who've been having painful sex!! I went to a specialist...

From what I read on one of the numerous websites I've been on, wish I knew which one, those of us with vestibulitis have more yeast than others but the symptoms do mimick a yeast infection ie. burning, itching. That would explain your negative results. Have you tried a low oxalate diet? Ive had this condition since for 7 months now and started a low oxalate diet about 1 to 2 months ago. It makes a world of difference for most people. Also calcium supplements help too. I went through 4 weeks of Diflucan. I was so excited thinking it was just a yeast infection and then all my pain would be gone. WRONG. I used the antifungal creams with the Diflucan and that made it worse. I was so disappointed but now I am just doing everything I can and waiting for the cure. It's a shame more OB docs aren't familiar with this condition. I know it's been around for years. Can't imagine what people did before the web. I just love knowing you guys are just keystroke away. It would be really lonely without all your support.
