Hey all,

I know that I'm a guy and this is the "women's health" board, but i think my question will be best answered here

My girlfriend and I are going to be having sex soon, and we both decided she should be on the BCP. She went to planned parenthood and they gave her ortho-tryclen lo, and told her she had to wait a month before having sex.

Now, that's different from everything she and I had read online (including PPHs website) that says if she starts the pill on the first day of her period, it works immediately and if she starts on the first sunday after her period, she has to wait a week.

So, my (our) question is, how long do we have to wait to have sex?!

Depends on who you talk to. I've been told that you should wait the full month, others have said either 1, 2 or 3 weeks. I waited for 2 weeks before I started having sex.

I waited a full month when i started the pill.... But Now I just got the patch and the rules with the patch are 7 days? I don' tknow why its so much of a difference.. but if you 2 are trying to rush things.. Tell her to go back and to get on the patch! That it supposed to be ok and ready after 7 fulldays! Good Luck!! Hey if you use a condom then you can do it whenever you want.. but if you are not going to use one.. then I'd give it at least a month on the pills... and even for the patch I'll wait another couple weeks.!! hehe

I talked to her about getting on the patch or the shot, 'cause they seem less hassle, but she was being stubborn. something about increased chance of weight gain or something

I read someplace else that the doctors would tell her wait a month if she is starting the pill just on any sunday, but if it is the first sunday after she starts her period, then she has to wait a week, and if she takes the pill within 24 hours of starting her period, then it works right away.

Now, she would not be ovulating during her period, right? so, if she starts the pill during her period, then she would be sure that no egg was released, right? Does that make sense, or am i totally confused?

Hmm.. Let me see.. the Shot! I'd be almost Positive that she will gain weight!! I always say thats why its birth Control (Gets you so big no man would have sex with you) But with the pill or the patch i think the most is like 5 lbs if even some women actually lose weight when they get on them.. so I guess it would depend on her. And for the pill I was told when I was on it that when you start it go through the Whole month first and then you don't have to worry about it! and The patch was if you start it within the first 24 hrs of your period then it works right away. But otherwise on the labels it says 7 days. Tell her not to worry to much about the pill and Patch.. I wouldn't recommend the shot though! there are so many people on the pill and not everyone is huge! Dont' worry abotu the weight.. I'd rather gain 5 lbs then have a child!! hehe
