Effexor XR and sex drive

I have been on Effexor XR for about 11 months and for the past 2 months, my sex drive has suffered. When I first started the medication, my sex drive decreased but I was OK once I "got going". Now, for about the past 1 or 2 months, I haven't been able to have an orgasm. My body feels in the mood physically (I don't have vaginal dryness or anything), but mentally it's like my mind is just blank. Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can do to help this?
Thanks

Re: Effexor XR and sex drive

Hi Daisy

I take Lustral (Zoloft in the US, I think) and have problems having an orgasm. I also took Seroxat (Paxil) - and I was just about totally numb 'down there'. It is a recognised side effect of many newer anti-depressants. To be honest, I have never found a suitable solution (except switching to Zoloft which gave me some sensation back).

I know for the SSRIs (such as Zolloft, Paxil), you can take a two day 'drug holiday' each week, which sometimes gives sensation back. I don't know whether it is possible to do this with Effexor - maybe ask your doctor.

The herbal supplement Gingko Biloba is apparently also recommended as it improves blood circulation - although it did nothing for me!

I read some articles on the internet about the antihistamine Periactin, which reverses the effects of SSRIs temporarily and helps some people have an orgasm (you take it 4 hours before sex, and if you can stay awake long enough it might just work!) - again, don't know if this works with Effexor. I've got a prescription to try it out - but unfortunately my boyfriend is on steroids and has no libido (what a pair!) - so I can't report back on whether it works.

If you come up with anything, I'd be really interested to hear - as it's something I've been putting up with for 4 years!

Good luck!

Re: Effexor XR and sex drive

Hi daisey,

I would not take a 'drug vactaion' from Effexor. I don't know if you are aware of the withdraw effects of Effexor, but they can be more than bothersome, and I doubt you would feel very sexual if you were experiencing them.
Talk to your doctor before taking a break from any med. Lot's have witdraw issues to consider. For Effexor 2 days is 2 too many IMO.

I know what you mean about being okay once you get going... I really didn't have the sexual side effects with effexor, but that is explained by other things.
I read a really good thread (on this board) about things you could take to incease libido.
Either switching meds or trying these might be good, but I would definitely talk to your doctor first.

Good Luck,

zoeee

Re: Effexor XR and sex drive

Daisy, I feel exactly the same way as you. Before I was on Effexor, i could be in the mood every day. Now, I just don't care. It wasn't like that at first. My boyfriend is not as sexual as me and is more into talking and stuff like that. I used to get mad about that. Now I just think, "Eh", and turn over and go to sleep. It is so frustrating!

Re: Effexor XR and sex drive

Thanks everyone for all of the replies! At least I know I am not alone! I won't take a 2 day vacation from Effexor because I have forgotten to take my pill one day, and by the next morning I was already feeling weird. But I appreciate the suggestion!
I may try the Gingko Biloba. I heard about some supplement, and it may have been Gingko Biloba.
I just got married about 4 months ago, so I hate being like this. My hubby is great about this whole thing and doesn't think I should switch meds, since the Effexor has been amazing. But it still bothers me.
Hopefully soon there will be a viagra for women???
Thanks everyone!!!
