Another bleeding during/after sex question

I am 22 years old and have been sexually active on again/off again for almost four years. My boyfriend and I began to have sex again last night after a long time of not having it (well over a year). In the past when I had sex I never experienced any bleeding or anything like that. However, last night, we had to stop because there was a significant amount of bleeding during sex...after we stopped I went into the bathroom and when I wiped there was quite a bit of bright red blood on the toliet paper. The bleeding continued over night but now this morning there is only some very faint blood, or dry blood when I wipe, so it appears to be stopping.

The sex that we had was quite rough...much more rough than we had in the past, so could this be a result of just some tearing and bruising that I haven't experienced before?

I know bleeding during and after sex could mean a lot of things, but do you think it would be okay to just hold off and let myself heal, then try again with more lube and not so rough...and then if it happens again to go to the doctor? I have always had normal pap tests and just a couple months ago I had a pelvic ultrasound (for something else, but all reproductive organs were examined as well) and that came out normal.

Thanks.
