I want to try to start having sex around my period to avoid getting pregnant. When is the best time to have sex: right after my period, before, during, two weeks before, etc? I heard a long time ago, but I can't remember.

There is no safe time unless you know for sure when you ovulate. Many women get pregnant at all different times of the month so the method you are thinking of using is not a very good one. Remember sperm normally live for 2-3 days inside of you but can live up to 5 days in extreme cases. Unless you are good at knowing when you ovulate you are risking pregnancy every time you have unprotected sex.
Go to the pregnancy board and ask some of the women on there...I know of a few on there that got pregnant from having unprotected sex while on their period.
Like it has been said there is the rsik no matter what time of your cycle it is. So wait on the unprotected sex until you are readyt o deal with the chance of pregnancy.
Do you have what is considerd a *normal* cycle (consisting of about 28-32 days)? If so, you can pretty much bet that you will ovulate around day 14 or 15 of the cycle. But because sperm can live in your body for up to 5 days in some cases, it's best to avoid unprotected sex between days 10-20. Does that make sense? Do you know how to count your menstural cycle?
Uh, I am totally aware that there is still a high risk. I am trying to do this as an ADDITION to my current protection.
Paisley,
Yea, I think I know how to count the days. Do I start on the day I start my period? Is that correct? So are you saying that it is the most dangerous between days 10-20?
Thanks to everyone who has posted.

Why would you think that having sex around your period would make you less likely to get pregnant? Sure, you're not ovulating, but you can get pregnant at any time of any month. Maybe I misunderstood your post, and I'm sorry if I did, I just thought I would say this in case I did read it right. <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">
Yep you misread her second post. She is using protection already but wants to avoid having sex during her most fertile time even though she is using protection. She is very wise to be that concerned about not getting pregnant.

Hey!
Yes, day 1 is the first day of your period. So let's say you have a 28 day cycle. Around day 14 or 15 you should ovulate, however sperm can live so if on day 10 you have unprotected sex then sperm can possibly live until day 15. The most critical days are days 14 and 15, but again if you have sex on day 15, on day 20 the egg could still be available to be fertlized by that sperm that lived for 5 days, because you may have ovulated a little later in that particular month. It happens! So, that's why I said days 10-20 should not be without protection. I hope I am making sense.

Thank you Paisley for the info. You made perfect sense. I am just not in the position to be getting pregnant, so I want to be "super duper" careful. LOL
