how accurate are the PRELIMINARY TEST RESULTS?

Please someone help!

You know how when you get tested for STDs, they take a sample from your penis (if you're a guy) and on that same day, they give you preliminary test results? The doctor told me "Good news, doesn't look like you have anything but come back in a week to make sure."

I have a few questions:
1. HOW ACCURATE are these preliminary test results?
2. What diseases are covered by this preliminary test? In particular, does it cover Herpes 1 and 2 and HPV (genital warts)?
3. To the extent that it is inaccurate, are the inaccuracies related more to false positives than false negatives? That is, am I likely okay if he the preliminary test result was negative?

I pray someone helps me before I get the final results!

Rob

1. I am not sure about the accuracy, perhaps someone else will be able to give some inputl

2. the "swab test" DOES NOT test for Herpes 1 or 2 or HPV. There is no test for HPV unless you have an actual lesion or wart. The only way to test for herpes, either type 1 or 2, without symptoms being present, is by blood test. Hepatitis, and I believe syphilis, can only be tested by blood. HIV can only be tested via blood test or urine sample. There is no test for Molluscum Contagium unless there are symptoms/lesions present. I believe the only STD's which can be tested via swab test are trich, gonnorhea, and clamydia.

3. again, I am no help with this question.

Okay, thanks for the information.
Now, as for what the Gram Stain test does apply to (Gonorrhea, Syphilis, Clamydia, etc?), how accuarate are the PRELIMINARY RESULTS for THOSE?
If he said I looked okay, but I did not get the final confirmed results (combined with the fact that I have no symptoms at all), how accurate was this?

syphillis is usually a blood test. the swab method for Chlamydia and Gonn are very accurate. Relax. Herpes blood tests? If you're concerned, ask your dr about the Western Blot for herpes. University of Washington does it. It costs $200 but worth the piece of mind. Wait 4 months after last exposure to take it.

Also, get an HIV test just to be safe
