STD's transmitted via hands or other contact? - Sexually Transmitted Diseases Message Board

Hello,

I'm wondering if there are any STD's that can be transmitted to a male other than via contact with a female's genitals or orally (eg: hands). I heard that HPV / genital warts could potentially be transmitted in this manner if the female has a wart on her hand. How likely/unlikely would this scenario be?
Your input would really be appreciated!

It's not likely unless you have open cuts on your hands. The cellular layers on your hands tends to resist infections.

From what I understand, this would be impossible. If the female had a wart on her hand, then it is NOT a strain of HPV that would cause genital warts. Different strains of HPV cause warts in different locations on the body. The strains that cause warts on the hands will not affect genital tissues. Likewise, the strains that cause warts on the genitals will not affect other body parts...with the exception of a few strains that will affect both genital and oral tissues.

I don't know about warts, but I do know that Herpes Type 1 can be transmitted via mouth to genitals. My sister finally found out what her problem was this week. Her boyfriend had a coldsore on his lip that had broke open... during some fun before they had sex he gave it to her. She had no idea how it happened till she retraced everything they had done, and went over it with her doctor. It's unlikely it will ever come back, but note that some std's are easily transmitted through careless actions.

sorry to hear about your sister. The same thing happened to me, I was diagnosed a little over a year ago with genital HSV1. My boyfriend didn't even have a coldsore at the time, so I got it while he was shedding the virus with no symptoms. I also ended up with herpes sores everywhere his mouth touched, including my nipples and the tip of my finger. My doctor put me on Valtrex, and said I should take it for the first year, because it tends to recur more in the first year, while your body gets used to it. Now, after the year was up, I stopped the valtrex, and I haven't had another outbreak yet. My doctor said the average number of outbreaks with genital HSV1 is about 1 per year, but it depends on the person's immune system, could be more, could be much less. Be supportive of your sister...it's a big shock to learn that you have this disease...with the public opinion of it and the stigma that goes along with it, it really makes you feel dirty and horrible. If she needs help or anyone to talk to about it, tell her to visit the herpes board here.
