sorry to hear about your sister. The same thing happened to me, I was diagnosed a little over a year ago with genital HSV1. My boyfriend didn't even have a coldsore at the time, so I got it while he was shedding the virus with no symptoms. I also ended up with herpes sores everywhere his mouth touched, including my nipples and the tip of my finger. My doctor put me on Valtrex, and said I should take it for the first year, because it tends to recur more in the first year, while your body gets used to it. Now, after the year was up, I stopped the valtrex, and I haven't had another outbreak yet. My doctor said the average number of outbreaks with genital HSV1 is about 1 per year, but it depends on the person's immune system, could be more, could be much less. Be supportive of your sister...it's a big shock to learn that you have this disease...with the public opinion of it and the stigma that goes along with it, it really makes you feel dirty and horrible. If she needs help or anyone to talk to about it, tell her to visit the herpes board here.
