When I was diagnosed with Genital HSV1 (the type that causes coldsores), my doctor told me that over 30% of the new genital herpes cases she sees are caused by HSV1 rather than HSV2, meaing that these people (including me) contracted herpes genitally from our partner's mouth while receiving oral sex. It is very slightly possible, but very unlikely, to spread it to your own genitals by touchig your lip and then touching down there, but it is very possible to spread it to someone else's genitals by performing oral sex on them. My fiance didn't even have a coldsore present on his lip when I caught it from him...
