Cold sore=herpes?

I think I have a cold sore on my bottom lip. It might be a pimple but I'm pretty sure it's a cold sore (I've had them before).

Now cold sores are forms of herpes right? And well, how easy is it to spread the virus from the mouth to the genitals? I've only touched it twice today and it hasn't ruptured yet, but I have touched my penis a few times through the day. Am I at risk for spreading the virus "down there"? Please help put my mind at ease!

Re: Cold sore=herpes?

highly unlikely according to a few articles i read.

1. u have antibodies to HSV-1 since u have a cold sore, so reinfection on the gen. is ALOT less likely.

2. HSV-1's preffered site is the lips. it is harder to be transferred to the gen.

3. unless u do an immediate action of touching ur lips and penis, chances are the virus would have died before you touch ur penis.

and let me end it off by saying, its still possible, but very unlikely. u shouldn't loss sleep over this.

Re: Cold sore=herpes?

When I was diagnosed with Genital HSV1 (the type that causes coldsores), my doctor told me that over 30% of the new genital herpes cases she sees are caused by HSV1 rather than HSV2, meaing that these people (including me) contracted herpes genitally from our partner's mouth while receiving oral sex. It is very slightly possible, but very unlikely, to spread it to your own genitals by touchig your lip and then touching down there, but it is very possible to spread it to someone else's genitals by performing oral sex on them. My fiance didn't even have a coldsore present on his lip when I caught it from him...
