Patches on Tongue - Sexually Transmitted Diseases Message Board

It's been 1 1/2 years since I could have contracted HIV.

My tongue is the problem. First I had a sore throat, now my tongue looks like it has geographic tongue or whatever it's called. I've also read about Erythematous Candidiasis. My mouth is not dry. The red patches are in the middle of my tongue. There are no odd sores, just what look like inflamed tastebuds. The only thing that hurts on my tongue are the inflamed tastebuds. My tongue isn't sure anymore. What does anyone think? Do you think it's Geographic Tongue or Erythematous Candidiasis?

I'm really scared that it's the latter and that I have HIV. My heart is pounding. I'm getting tested when I go back to school.

Sounds like you have inflamed tastebuds

I'm not trying to make light of your feelings at all, but sometimes we read into things too much. Do you have other symptoms of HIV? Or did you get inflamed tastebuds, looked it up, and started scaring yourself?

Well, I also have the red patches where the white on my tongue has somehow disappeared.

I got bloodwork done, but not for the purpose of finding HIV or anything close to that. I had bruises on my legs that wouldn't go away so my doctor just said they'd do some blood tests. Would they have seen an excess of white blood cells you think?

Only if they were looking at your white blood count. Do you know what blood tests you had done?

Did you engage in a high risk behavior that makes you think you have HIV? (Unprotected sex with someone who is HIV positive, for example).

The early stages of an HIV infection can involve such symptoms as fever, sore throat, headaches, muscle aches, joint pain, enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, and groin, skin rash, abdominal cramps, nausea, or vomiting, as well as diarrhea.
