Question abnormal pap?

When I went to health services at my school my pap came back abnormal. I wasnt able to go back for another pap because they didnt take my insurance and couldnt afford to go again. BUT i am going to family planning for another pap.
anyway i kno it could possibly be hpv, but could it be sumthing worse? Could it also just be nothing?
does anyone kno what std's family planning tests u for?

Re: abnormal pap?

Hi angelgrl please try not to worry too much. It is very very rare that a pap actually shows cervical cancer, it shows changes that if left untreated MAY eventually lead to cervical cancer. I am presuming you are also very young as you are still at school, cervical cancer is extremely rare in women under the age of 20.

Simple inflammation or an infection can cause your pap to come back abnormal. Anything that changes the appearance of your cells (even a temporary one) will cause an abnormal result.

I know how you are feeling, I had an abnormal pap and am waiting for my repeat one and it does make me anxious. You must remember though, even if pre-cancerous cells have been found, they are NOT cancer, and they can be treated to prevent you ever getting cervical cancer. x

Re: abnormal pap?

Hi, the reason I mentioned cancer is because you said "I know it could be hpv, but could it be something worse?" so I automatically thought you were meaning cancer.

It's not necessarily HPV that has made your pap come back abnormal. As I said an infection or inflammation can do this. Inflammation can be caused by menstruation, that's why its best to get your pap done mid cycle. x

Re: abnormal pap?

I would go back and get a second just to be sure. Go to the free health clinic (probably the family planning) and get it done again.

I had an abnormal pap and had to go back so they could do a small biopsy and take some cells. Everything came back just fine.
