hey, you can get HPV through non-sexual contact... i wouldn't worry about unfaithfulness. If someone insists they have been faithful, then I am more likely to believe them and assume the virus was caught non-sexually (if they were both virgins when they started having sex together).
Yes, it could also be from a previous partner if either of them had previous partners.
It is also possible that it can be transmitted to a child during birth - but it is a highly contagious disease, and most people will end up catching it during their life. It is not too much to worry about. The warts - if they show up (because they don't always show up) - are relatively easily dealt with using topical creams or surgery (although they can be quite stubborn and can come back a number of times).
And girls - any girls / women - just need to be careful that they are getting regular pap smears so that they can pick up any changes that the virus may cause to their cervix before it leads to cervical cancer. Women have to do this whether or not they have been in an at risk situation to catch the virus - because it is so contagious, and you can catch it without ever knowing.
