My sister has genital herpes, with secondary herpes in her eyes. Her doctor told her the eye herpes wasn't contagious. She's had occasional eye infection flare-ups over the last 10 years, and had a lot of problems in the past year. Her doctor has had her on meds for the past 3 months and her eyes are much better now.
Whenever my sister's eye herpes flares-up, she isn't allowed to visit my nephew, for fear that he'd get infected (the baby's mom set that rule, not a doctor). Well, since the eye herpes has been better lately, my sister spent a few hours visiting my 6 month old nephew. One week later and the baby now has herpes in his throat.
Our nephew is at that stage where he puts everything in his mouth, and he loves to grab at your face. We guess that when my sister was holding him, the baby grabbed her face, touched her eyes (apparently still contagious), then put his hand in his mouth. My sister's eye specialist said her eye herpes wasn't contagious, but I guess he never thought to mention that's not true if someone stuck their finger in her eye and then in their throat.
We are all so upset. Will the beautiful 6 month old boy will have herpes for life just because his aunt wanted to see him? His pediatrician has him on meds, but now what?
Has anyone ever dealt with anything like this? Does anyone know about transmission of herpes of the eye?
