persistent urethritis, don't trust doctor
Sorry for such a long post, but I have a bit of a unique situation, and I'm not sure how to proceed. Any advice would be of great help.
I'm currently living in the Northeast of Thailand. About a month ago, I had unprotected sex with my girlfriend. About one week later, I began to develop an itchy sensation in my urethra, and the next day it started to burn when I urinated. I could not notice any puss from the end of my penis. I waited a couple days to see if it would go away on its own, and went to see a doctor when it didn't. I suspected an std, and I didn't want to mess around, so I made a 2 hour trip to go to the best hospital in the region.
When I got to the hospital they had me see a "specialist". He did a urine test, and it came back positive for urethritis infection (when I gave the urine test, I could see puss floating in the sample). He gave me ciprofloxacin to take twice daily for five days. I took the antibiotics, and felt no difference after 4 days. I did extensive research online, and found that the antibiotic he had given me is useless against urethritis, and the antibiotic usually given for urethritis is doxycycline (I did finish his antibiotic regimen). I'm not usually the type to self-medicate, but after all the research I did, and after the terrible experience with the "specialist" I saw, I did not want to go back. I went and got ciproflaxin at the pharmacy myself and started taking it. I've just finished taking 100 mg twice daily for 1 week.
I started to feel better almost immediately, and the symptoms have gone away for the most part. However, there is still a very slight irritation when I urinate, and I peed into a clear cup this morning, and there is still some puss floating around in the urine.
I understand that irritation can continue for a week or two after the antibiotics are completed, but is it normal for there still to be puss present? Is that a sign that I'm still infected? I'm not sure how to proceed. I really don't want to go back and see that "specialist" again. How long should I wait to go get tested again?
I would really appreciate any advice.
note: It is not reinfection from a partner. I have not had sex with anyone since I first noticed the symptoms, and I informed my girlfriend immediately.
