Could some one help me with some information about shingles? What is it, diagnois, treatment, cure, medication, etc.? I have been reading some on this subject but I'm still very confused. From what I've read, it appears I have all the signs and systems of shingles. That is, intense nerve pain, even the slightest touch is very painful. I also have intense itching and a severe burning sensation, almost like the feeling of fire ants taking their turn in stinging me. Most of this occurs on my back, however I have experienced this on my arms, buttocks, groin area, and down my legs. I have not had any blistering rash or any scarring. My neurosurgen has prescribed lidoderm patches and ultram to relieve the pain and xanax for anxiety. Also I am to see a pain specialist doctor.
Thanks for letting me vent.

My Mom had it somewhere around 5 or less years ago. It was miserable and lasted a couple of months. But, this was before the new vaccine that the medical field thinks they have come up with. I don't know how available it is but, you might ask your doctor about it. I also don't know if you can only have the vaccine if you are in the middle of an outbreak, if you have never had an outbreak or are at the end of one or hace had one. But, you should ask your doc about it so you are prepared for it if and when the time comes that you can have the vaccine.
Other than that, I don't really know enough about shingles to be able to advise you any better. I think my Mom was given pain killers but, it seems that what I remember (and I live in a different state than her so I was only around her via telephone) is that she just had to wait it out.
My grandmother and brother have had problems with this. For both of them it was probably triggered by stress. They were both told it was from having chicken pox and the virus resurfaces in the form of shingles.(I don't know why it would affect some people and not others, maybe just different in everyone or different immune systems)I don't know if there is a cure, maybe since there is now a chicken pox vaccination that would help with shingles...I don't know but ask your doc, but they don't know everything.Maybe search around on-line to see if there are any studies re the vaccination.

The doc just told me yesterday that I have shingles. I have pains in my middle back, only in one area and on my front side right under my rib cage I am itchy and a little numb in that spot. I went to the doc and he told me right away it was shingles. I was scared because I didn't know what it was but I have been doing research and speaking with people who have had it. This is a couple things that I gather from what I learned maybe it will be helpful for you; I know that the sooner you get to the doctor the better, so that you don't break out in rashes. also; Shingles is not a new infection; rather, it is a second outbreak of the chicken pox virus. Some of the virus germs that cause chicken pox stay in the body, remaining inactive in the nerve cells near the spine for many years. Then the virus suddenly wakes up from the unactive state and grows. Once active, the germs travel along the nerve paths to the skin, leaving a path of destruction along the nerves in which they travel. The result is the pain and rash of shingles. It is important to realize that just because a person develops shingles, the entire immune system is not necessarily having problems.
Anyway, I hope this helps and the doctor gave me famvir to take, what did the doc give you?
