Young Person with Shingles

Hi,

I am only 33 but have been diagnosed with Shingles. My GP told me it is usually a virus that affects older people.

I have been reading articles on the internet about it, and it says that the majority of people under 50 that get Shingles have some underlying illness that causes a week immune system.

Other than the Shingles, I am reasonably fit and healthy. Should I be concerned about an underlying illness? What should I do from here?

Cheers
Isurus

Re: Young Person with Shingles

I'd be interested in seeing what people have to say about this. I am almost 33 and had shingles when I was 26. My doctor told me it could easily be due to stress.
Now I'm having "odd" things going on (and have been for 1.5 years) and am working on getting a doctor to do more than just say "oh it's probably fibromyalgia". I'd rather they rule out other things before making that diagnosis.

Re: Young Person with Shingles

The youngest person I've seen with shingles was a 4 year girl. Her mom had her in a horrible living situation. Men in and out of her house. Every man she ended living with she told her daughter that it was her father. The grandmother took custody of the little girl and brought her to many doctors when the one told her the girl had shingles. She didn't believe it at all. All doctors gave her the same diagnoses.

The psycholisgst was the last doctor she went to and was told the same thing. It was due to strees. The little girl was so stressed out that just sitting in a chair watching tv you could see her body shake from her nerves being so stressed.

I don't know her outcome I stopped going to church.

Re: Young Person with Shingles

I am 39 and had shingles a few months ago and also a small out break last summer. Everyone tells me it is stress related but when I started to take the valtrex for the shingles I felt 100 times better all around. I have white sores on my tonuge which disapear when I took the valtrex and I did not feel anywhere as run down and tired like I usually do. I also wonder if I have some underlying issue but am afraid to find out!!

Re: Young Person with Shingles

Hi all,
I had shingles last year on my left arm. I am 28, male. That was when I was working in Mumbai, India.
It started as red rash on the skin, then progressed to a lot of tiny white bubbles on the skin in a day or two. I thought it was a fungal problem; and went to a demitologist clinic. The right doctor was not available. One who was available was a pediatrician who said he could consult me too!
Well, on the first look of the arm, he reacted wierdly; and treated me like an exhibit to other people around. I was clueless about what was happening. Well, he declared it was Herpes Zoster. He asked me to visit him the next day. (seems, he wanted to ****** a lot that night before advising me anything)
The following morning when I visited him; he diorectly said that it could be something really nasty and that I go for a blood checkup. I was a bit shocked. I did go for a blood check up; and in half an hour was told that everything was OK. Just that my fasting blood-sugar was on the upper end.
I was wise to decide to change the doctor. Then I consulted a known dermitologist. He laughed at the way the previous doctor treated me; and said that it was not that uncommon a disease. He said in local dialect the disease is called 'Nagin' (Serpent); as it happenes along a particular nervous line. I didnt remember having suffered from Chicken pox. He said that several times chicken pox goes undiagnosed; or the symptoms are so negligible that we tend to ignore it. Well, the disease 'nagin' is nothing but a reactivation of the chicken pox virus which might have caused because of stress.
Though I developed a problem of anxiety since then which still petrsists mildly; the doctor said there was nothing to worry at all.
After that I got to know about several other people of my age having that disease.

I would advise all to consult the right doctor.

God Bless!

Re: Young Person with Shingles

Hi everyone, I had my first outbreak of shingles 2 years ago. I am 39 now. I had an awful case that also got infected. I took antivirals and antiobiotics however, it seems it was too late for the antiviral meds and it began to spread. Finally it cleared up only to come back about 2 months later and as of now I have had so many outbreaks I can't even count them really. The first 2 were on the back of my head, neck, around to my ear and face. The third was lower spine This was the worst because I could not move from the nerve pain. I actually have it right now on the back of my neck. I went to several doctors and they are baffled-except for one an infectious disease doc who did all sorts of bloodwork and did find that there is something wrong with my immune system, not sure what because my bloodwork is so screwy it isn't adding up to one clear diagnosis but seems to be some sort of autoimmune disorder. Now I just have to get up the nerve to find the right doctor and pursue this because like someone else said, I am a little afraid to find out! Also I now suffer from constant nerve pain that came from this awful Disease. I wish the rest of you luck!
