went to my doc today....he diagnosed me with shingles...everything is on left side of my face, neck, and head.
i am on prednisone and famciclovir(a med to treat shingles. my left side of face is swollen...pain is a burning throbbing type...it hurts to even touch that side of my face, neck, and head.
my doc hopes we got it early enough...i'm taking percosett 10mg every 4 hrs..it's really helping the pain. i have the touching skin pain from fibro also...now this!
just wanted to vent to you all about my latest dx, that i definitely don't need with everything else!
Bevann26: Do you have a rash just on the left side? How did he determine that you have Shingles? I ask because I've been dealing with a rash for almost 2 years now and I've had several possible diagnoses thrown my way.
bevann is this your first bout with shingles? Braveman had them about 14yrs. ago. They started on the right side of his face next to his hairline and within a day and a half his right eye and face were so swollen. He has not had them since. I have always heard that once you have them you can get them again. So far so good. WAIT.....his were also on the left side of his face. I'm very bad with left and right and I had to turn around to figure it out. They are very painful from what he said. I am saying a few prayers for you, hang in there.
Lynn, what has your doc said about your rash. Have they done a skin punch or anything like that, or a scraping. If it were shingles you and the doc would know it. I've never had them but I saw them and lived with them.
Glojer: With the other symptoms I've been having (high ANA, fatigue, joint pain, hair loss, etc.) one doc said Lupus. Referred to rheumy who said wasn't lupus, guessed it was FM, but had nothing to offer about the rash (which started at the same time everything else started). I went out on my own and made a dermatologist appointment next week. I'm wondering if I have to have an actual outbreak of the rash at the time of the appointment or can they do those tests without the actual rash?
hi girls hope you are having a better pain day today, thanks for your nice replies.
lynn...for 3 days i was getting a new problem...first open canker sore on the slit of my lip...next day earache and finally my eye started feeling like there was something in it, not opened all the way and blood shot...whole left side of my face etc. was swollen, burning and painful. doctor time!
he thought i was coming down with shingles..but no rash yet...put me on keflex because there was a definite infection there. told me if i started with rash to come in and he would see me right away..well the next morning rash was there (looked like chick pox) centered on cheek where the sore was. took me off keflex and put me on shingle treatment.
glojer..yes my first time..doc said hopefully we caught it in time and 10 days of these meds should get rid of it.
thank you so much for the prayers, i need all the help i can get right now!
lynn can't remember if we discussed thyroid at one time. Be sure you have your doc check that and get copies of that blood work. All your symptoms (not sure about rash) could be thyroid. Even if you don't have the rash when you go to dermie they should be able to do a skin punch or something if you can show them directly where it was. Braveman has dermatomyositis and for the first time in his life he has sensitive skin. So I have been to the dermie a lot with him. He had blood work and skin punches done and the punches originally (before he got so bad) would show an auto immune problem, but never what problem. They would also read like he was allergic to a medication, the docs and I went through the process of elimination. This was when he was so desperately ill and had a feeding tube etc. what an ordeal that was. Anyway no medication was proven to be causing his skin problem. Sooooo.....I think it is worth your while to have the dermie check it out and depending on where it is have a skin punch or whatever they can do if the doc thinks it will show something. I also don't want you to get your hopes built up cause it can be a long process.
I know how hard this is for you trying to get answers, I have been there. Just please never give up, keep plugging away, follow every lead and one day you will get a few answers and then a few more and eventually you will find a medication regimen that works and maybe you will get a few medical answers. I hope so, but don't give up. Please let me know how the dermatologist appt. goes for you.
bevann, Hang in there!!! I think stress can cause a bout of shingles to occur so it stand to reason that it can make it worse. So take some deep breathes and relax. We don't want fibro to get a leg up with the stress either. I know it isn't fun, but it will be over soon.
