20 weeks and just found out I have Shingles

I am 20 weeks pregnant with my second child and just found out that I have Shingles. I wasn't really sure what it was, so for those of you who don't know, it's basically like chicken pox but in adults. Apparently after you have had the chicken pox the virus lays dormant in your body for the rest of your life. The virus can resurface years later and that is when you end up with Shingles. Apparently it's not overly common in younger people but it does happen. I was given a prescription for Valtrex to take for 7 days, three times a day. Has anyone taken Valtrex while pregnant, or even when not? If so, what if any side effects were there? I "THINK" this is the same medicine prescribed for herpes infections as chicken pox and shingles are a form of the herpes virus.

Thanks!

Re: 20 weeks and just found out I have Shingles

I would ask the pharmacist. I am 28 and have had chronic schingles since I was 21 due to stress. I cannot for the life of me remember what they put me on. I don't take any meds when I get them now, just because I know that they will run it's course. They are painful that's for sure. Try not to stress too much and take it easy!

Re: 20 weeks and just found out I have Shingles

Thanks! I would LOVE to not have to take anything but they acted as though that was not an option. It's really not all that bad, and I can definitely deal with it, the area is actually not that large at all. I am not sure how they work or what but they have already started to scab over. Does that mean they are on their way to healing and going away?

Yea, once they scab over they will begin to go away and the pain may or may not fully go away. I always know when I am about to get an outbreak, I feel those painful twinges on my side. I think all will be fine. They may have put you on the meds because you are pregnant. I know Schingles are highly contagious to infants and the elderly, I am not sure about babies in utero. Good luck!

Re: 20 weeks and just found out I have Shingles

I don't know much about shingles but I do know that Valtrex IS used to treat herpes. I've head of several cases where the doctor gives this to pregnant women in their last month of pregnancy for a safe delivery to prevent outbreaks around that time. I'm sure it's safe for your baby or they would do automatic c-sections instead of trying other options. I think everything is just fine.

Shingles is a form of herpes, that is why they give Valtrex for them. Btw, if you ever have questions about meds, always as the pharmasists. They went to school for that, and drs only need 2 weeks training in pharmocology.
