Quick question about Shingles

Hi,

I have had shingles now for 8 days and I'm happy with the treatment prescribed by my doctor.

My questions are about itchiness. The itchiest parts of my body are not where the rash is and wondered if this was normal? Is it okay to scratch these non-rash itches? Also can I take something like an anti-histamine to relieve the itchiness?

Thank you

Thank you for your reply. I have read so much about shingles (thank goodness for the internet! ), but nothing that mentions itching in areas not covered by the rash and I wondered if I could make things worse by scratching these itches - I'm in a pretty bad enough state already!

It might help to take an over the counter antihistamine like Benadryl or something. You can ask a pharmacist at your local drug store if it's okay to take it with your prescription. They know just as much as the doctor if not more. And they are much more convenient to talk to without having to make an appt. to see your doctor. If the over the counter medication is not preferred then the pharmacist may recommend something else. I know when my hubbie got a boil in the 'sun don't shine area' the pharmacist recommended a simple warm clothe to the area 2 to 3 times a day. Sure enough, that boil went away in about 2 days. Good luck!
