Shingles question!

I was recently diagnosed with shingles in my right thigh/groin area. It did take me about 4 days after the rash appeared before I was able to get medical treatment. THey put me on Valtrex to take 3x a day for a week. The initial rash is starting to get better but I have noticed that tingling feeling, which i now know is an indicator of where the blisters will appear, but now I am feeling that tingling/sensitive feeling on my back and on the back of my right arm.

My question is, since I am on Valtrex, is this medicine supposed to stop the blisters from appearing in different areas or can I expect more blisters to start appearing on these areas that are now tingling?
I have also read that it is important to start taking medication within 72 hours after you first notice the rash or the medication may not be as effective. It took me 4 days so I'm worried maybe the medicine isn't being as effective at preventing new outbreaks?

I would appreciate any comments or advice

Re: Shingles question!

I had what they thought was shingles several months back. Unfortunately, they did not diagnose it until a week and a half or so into it.

The things I have learned about shingles may or may not help you but thought I would respond in case. I know shingles typically only effect one side of the body rather than both and does not always have to cause "blisters" like they typically show. Mine never really became pustules, just more like angioedema that was very itchy, sensitive to heat (like water in the shower etc).

Do not put things like benadryl lotion on them etc. From my understanding, the Valtrex can help with the healing time and severity of shingles, but not "halt" it or stop if from getting worse. I have several other "issues" going on that I am beginning to wonder if they can be traced back to the shingles (lightheadedness etc etc) that I never had before that episode.

I wish you the best, I know it can be very uncomfortable but they will get better. Also, if they start getting on your face or near your eyes, go back to the doctor as soon as you can.
