Lois, I'm so sorry you have shingles. I had them in March and was off work a full month. I had always heard they were terribly painful, but I had no idea how painful until I had them. When mine finally broke out, they were on my left foot and lower leg. The deep aching pain was initially on my side and down to my thigh. When the rash broke out, the burning was terrible on my foot and lower leg. The doctor had initially diagnosed it as a kidney infection because of the side and back pain. The blisters broke out on a Sunday morning, and I finally went to the ER, because the pain was so bad and I knew my dr was going to be out of town all week.
I hate to tell you this, but I think it is unlikely that you will be feeling better in a week. Even though I was off work a month, when I went back, I could only go part time for at least a couple more weeks. Of course this could have been worse, because I was already experience sciatica and back problems.
I would suggest you take the anitviral religiously and also the steroid if you can manage it at all. They say that it will help keep you from developing Post Herpetic Neuralgia. (which is a continuing of the shingles symptoms after shingles is over. they say it can last months or even years)
Take care of yourself. Pamper yourself and take your meds. (do I sound like your mother?)
Write again, if you want. I feel like I'm an expert on shingles by now.
