Shingles or Trapped Nerve

4 days ago I woke up with pain in my shoulder which radiates down my arm all the way to my little finger. The pain is worse when sitting in my car or lying on my side in bed, but I can raise my arms above my head! My GP thinks it might be shingles so I wanted to know if anyone else has had shingles start in this way!?*

My skin isn't sore to touch, nor do I feel ill. I have made an appointment to see a private physio but I have to wait 3 days for their next available appointment.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Re: Shingles or Trapped Nerve

Shingles can start with nerve irritation and pain, but by day 3 the rash has erupted in the skin area supplied by that nerve. The pain is not usually positional, and rarely goes into the fingers. Your pain sounds more like a nerve impingement in the neck, which happens usually from a bulging, deteiorating disc between the vertebrae. Since the problem is relatively new, you may get some relief from antiinflammatory meds OTC like Naproxen, avoiding the positions that worsen the pain, and wearing a soft cervical collar to limit motion of neck temporarily. If that doesn't help, sometimes a short course of Prednisone, Rx from your Dr., will get you through the episode. If persisting an MRI should be done. Sometimes traction will help relieve the nerve pressure.

Re: Shingles or Trapped Nerve

Hi...How are you. I had shingles about 4 years ago. Mine started with what looked like mosquito bites on my wrist. It was very itchy. Eventually I started getting more and my arm started getting pain going through it. I went to the doctors, he said shingles. Unfortunately because it had been more than 3 days by the time I was diagnosed, they were unable to help me. I was on a huge dose of pain killers for a week to try and keep it under control. I ended up with blisters on my shoulder and down to my palm. Shingles usually go down a nerve in a straight line. Very painful and takes weeks to subside. Also very contagious until sores dry up. I hope your doctor was able to help you. Take care
