Acute partial tear 6 days ago
I am new to these forums. Thanks in advance for all advice.
6 days ago I was kayaking and braced with my right arm when my kayak was rolled quickly to the right side by a rapid. My arm was extended further to the side than it should have been. I felt a distinct tear within the right shoulder and experienced an immediate intense weakness throughout my right arm accompanied by moderate pain. The weakness and pain subsided within 1-2 hours. Full range of motion was regained without any significant pain. For the first several days I iced the shoulder with some compression and ibuprofen. Today I began heat therapy with an electric heat pad. I am continuing ibuprofen. Initially I had some tenderness along the lateral/posterior aspect of my deltoid. This tenderness seems to have subsided for the most part after several days.
Current symptoms: No weakness. Full range of motion. Minor pain noted occasionally when applying force at extremes of range of motion and akward positions. Minor occasional aching in anterior aspect of deltoid. Clicking within the shoulder noted during some motion, most notably when doing a forward crawl stroke.
History: A similar injury to same shoulder approximately 8 years ago with apparent full recovery after a couple months with no lasting deficits. No treatment sought for this incident.
Would this be worth a visit to an orthopedic specialist or is their prescribed treatment likely to be what I am already doing at home (heat, ibuprofen, gentle range of motion, light exercise, and rest from strenuous activity)? From my online research it sounds like I am not necessarily a candidate for surgical treatment. I am a 29 year old male and am typically very active and would like to return to strenuous activity.
Any and all suggestions/comments will be very welcomed.
