come&go bad shoulder/arm pain

1-1/2 years ago, I had a breast exam biopsy (I'm getting another check tomorrow - since then I've regularly had them every 6mos). I have to hold my arm straight up and bend at the elbow over my head so the needles go in easily.

Right after that 1st biopsy, I had to hold my arm almost as in a sling position to keep my breast from sagging too much and ice packs on the needle area. I swear since that time, I have had trouble with my shoulders - both.

It started with the left side that the biopsy was on. But I've switched off too ever since.

It's as if something is wrong in the deltoid area, sometimes I feel pain at the very top of the shoulder joint, sometimes almost at my biceps. It can be anywhere around the deltoid - front, back, midway. When it's bad, I can't lift my arm up a certain way - or sometimes, I can't move it backward without extreme pain.

I'm going to a rheumatologist next week, as my GP said I need to see 1 since I am ANA positive. I'm wondering if this is part of that issue, or just plain some freak muscle thing by itself.

I worry about rotator cuff, or just that I'm always stuck with this problem.

I started working out, hoping maybe I just don't do enough and have weak shoulders (I'm housewife with 1 4yo, and haven't had much to do except lifting him up sometimes!). But it's been almost 5 mos, and I still get pain.

Does any of it sound familiar?

I just typed you a long response and lost it.

I can't relate to your biopsy connection, but your symptoms sound like mine when I was diagnosed with shoulder impingement syndrome. It hurt to raise my arm, especially above shoulder level. Over the months, it began hurting to try to put my hand behind my back. I eventually lost my ability to put my hand behind my back at all. I had no injury to my shoulder. It came on gradually. I eventually developed shoulder bursitis and tendonitis and bicep tendonitis. I ended up having a subacromial decompression surgery. It got me back to pretty much normal. It might be worth seeking out an orthopedic shoulder specialist.

I find it interesting on the ANA as well. I've had a positive ANA (1:640 homeogeneous) for a couple years and none of my doctors have really cared about it. I wish you well at the rheumatolotist.

That's wild! I have the exact same results this summer! ANA 1:64 homogeneous.

Sometimes I wonder if my shoulders are suffering from my spine "injuries" getting older. My neck is slightly skewed from an accident years ago - whiplash, obliquely hit instead of dead behind. Mostly it gives trouble on my right side, but I wonder if any arthritis can cause it to "branch out". I used to have headaches from my neck ache, and they'd mostly be right-sided. Now, I often have similar neck&headaches but they can be left-sided, too. (I also got problems from a mysterious sacral-joint/hip injury a few years ago.) So I just wonder if it's really some kind of neuropathy, as opposed to muscle/tendon problems.

I'm curious, have you ever had your TMJ evaulated? It could have been impacted by your accident as well as your neck.

If your jaw was thrown out of alignment, it could be impacting your headaches as well. TMJ is also neck related. When it is out it can impact your body alignment and poor body alignment can impact the TMJ. I've found that when my TMJ is out of whack that it makes my shoulder worse as well. My PT for TMJD spends a lot of time on my neck and shoulders. There is a sticky at the top of the TMJ board with a list of many of the most common TMJD symptoms that you may find interesting. I know when they did my scans, they said it is only a matter of time until arthritis develops in my jaw.

Wondering if you ever got any answers regarding your esophagus symptoms; I am pregnant and your descriptions sound exactly like what I am feeling. I have not been able to get any answers from physicians, except that after I deliver I should have a endoscopy (not reassuring). Did your discomfort ever go away? What did you do?

I would so appreciate any guidance. Thanks!!!!

Hello - I'm sorry, to what esophagus issues are you referring? Was this another old thread? I've had reflux both esophagus and into my throat for years.

Sorry, it was from this post. Let me know if anything came of it. Like I said, you described my symptoms almost exactly. Thanks!

esophageal spasms now?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi again!

Well, yes, I'm pregnant, so we have to take anything that happens to me now with a grain of salt!

Anyway, I noticed TODAY a seeming dead stop to my gag-reflex problems, only to notice much irritation in my throat/esophagus. This culminated in genuine SORENESS gripping mostly my throat (all of it, including rear of my mouth) and in my esophagus, sometimes seeming to go from the throat downward. It's as if I had a huge fresh bruise inside there.

Hasn't yet stopped me from eating, but sometimes it does seem to strike more after a bite of food. Not sure about that because this all hasn't been around long enough.

Does this sound like it could be those dreaded spasms in the esophagus that sometimes our "victims" talk about?

I have been having alot of real heartburn the last month or so - commensurate with pregnancy, I guess. But I have been totally off Nexium since June, and on Nexium I never experienced any of this, including the real heartburn (more of throat burn - which I don't notice much now).

Oh, that was in my pregnancy. I don't even remember it. No, I haven't had that kind of trouble. I get various issues here and there but I don't recall that kind since the baby. Sorry I can't help much!

BTW, just today I've gotten the shoulder twinge-turned-pain again.

I hate it.
