surgery

I'm having surgery on my shoulder to remove three calcium
calcifications and bone shaving. How much pain is to be
expected. My doctor says I will be in a sling for a few days.
I guess my question is why should I need pt if this is such a
minor surgery?

Re: surgery

I had a similar surgery (subacromial decompression) where they shaved down the bone and cleaned out debris. Honestly, I was in so much pain before the surgery that it was almost a relief after surgery. I was only in a sling for a couple days, then started PT. In my case, I'd lost ROM before surgery. The PT helped me regain the ROM pretty quickly.

Re: surgery

hi, I've had two shoulder surgeries, first was regular rot cuff and 2nd was rot cuff w/ shaving and spurs. Of course the second one was worse. I didin't start PT for 3 weeks per Dr. orders on the 2nd one and therapist wasn't happy I ended up w/ partially frozen shoulder because I didn't move it cuz it was in the sling the whole time and I had to be put under again and the dr. manipulated it to unfreeze it then I started PT the next day.

You don't want it to freeze up, you will be sore and won't want to move it so PT is important even though they aren't repairing a tear. Be sure to do your home exercises too, very important. Don't want to go thru what I had to go thru. good luck, Cathy
