having surgery on the 26th, i'm a little scared

I'm having surgery on Monday to remove calcium deposits, and the doctor said something about shaving a bone. I guess thats the part that scares me. Has anybody had this done, is there a lot of pain involved. I don't know what to expect. This is my third surgery this year and I guess I'm just tired of pain. Any input will be appreciated.

Good luck with your surgery Monday. I am having surgery Thursday for a rotator cuff tear, labrum treat and likely a torn bicep tendon, too. I am also having a bone spur shaved down from an old shoulder injury. I dislocated my shoulder in September. I'm sorry I can't offer any advice but wanted to wish you luck.

Re: having surgery on the 26th, i'm a little scared

hi I had rot cuff surgery in may and he shaved some to removed some spurs and "clean up" as he said. I will eventually have to have it replaced because of so much osteo. My dr. didn't want to start PT until 3 weeks and the therapist wasn't happy w/ that when I got there. I ended up being partially frozen and had to have Manupulation Under anethesia (MUA) in July where the dr. moves it around himself to break the scar tissue away.

yes its painful I have to say. get an ice machine before you leave the hospital that will help w/ pain, be SURE to do your exercises at home like you're supposed to and take your pain meds BEFORE about 45 min before PT so you can do them. don't try to be brave. Good luck, Cathy

Hi Ladies, just wanted to wish you well on your upcoming surgeries. I've had two surgeries on my right shoulder due to RC tears so understand what you will be going thru and I do remember them shaving quite a bit of bone off my collar bone don't know if it was done anywhere else. Please update us and let us know how your doing when your able.

Re: having surgery on the 26th, i'm a little scared

Hi Kate,

I had the same shoulder surgery a few years ago. After the first couple days, I was actually in much less pain than I was prior to surgery. The shaving of the bone and "clean up" of the shoulder is pretty easy to heal from. It takes longer to heal when something is being fixed up. I started PT a couple days after my surgery. Within a couple months, I'd regained all of the ROM that I'd lost prior to surgery.

By the way, the procedure is called a subacromial decompression.

Wishing you both well with your surgeries.
