Hi, I had surgery for a broken upper humerus in late January. A plate and 12 pins and screws were put in. I've had over 2 months of twice weekly physical therapy, plus I exercise at home, but I still have virtually NO external rotation. I kept the shoulder immobilized for the first 3 weeks, since I was in a lot of pain. But I've been working hard since then to regain my range of motion. Why isn't the external rotation coming back-I've made improvements with everything else. Any suggestions?
2 months is not very long when it comes to shoulder recovery. Usually internal rotation is the last to come back but due to your injury, ER may take longer. I am 9 weeks out from a reverse replacement with an intraoperative tuberosity fracture. I cannot even start pt yet except for gentle stretching! Patience is the key. I have had 6 surgeries in less than 4 years on the same shoulder. Time is the answer!
Thanks for the encouragement and reality check, Galalena. Hard to believe it takes so long to recover. I also damaged a tuberosity (I saw my CT scan-I knocked it halfway off of the bone.) I consider myself lucky now that I can do PT. I wish you a safe recovery and hope you are able to exercise soon.
