Question Hi Newbie Here, Just Diaganosed at Age 43

I had a pulmonary function test today and it was not good. The doc says it is asthma. He put me on Singulair and Combivent. I cannot believe that this is my problem. I have had no attacks, just extreme shortness of breath and muscle weakness. Is it possible to get asthma later in life like this??? I see him again tommorrow and he is going to explain. Could it be some other COPD?? Thanks in advance for your answers, I am very concerend about this.

Re: Hi Newbie Here, Just Diaganosed at Age 43

Don't fret over this too much! I was just diagnosed a couple of years ago with allergies first , then asthma, and I'm 48. I have always had allergies and I have read that a high percentage of people with hayfever and allergies will develop asthma sometime later. I did the same thing as you: I panicked because my father died with emphysema and my uncle had lung cancer. So you can understand how I worried so about this. One of the reasons I worried was because I didn't respond at first to the medicine the doctor gave me. I just knew I had COPD. But after being on Advair for 6 months, I finally started seeing some results. I was like you also in the fact that I didn't have asthma attacks, just shortness of breath, especially when climbing stairs or walking really fast. I am overweight and for years I just thought it was my weight causing this. I think I probably had it for some time and just was in denial. Another symptom of mine is a lingering cough after a cold or flu. My lung function test was a lot better this last time. It still isn't quite normal, but I might never have a 100% on my test. I might have let this go without proper medication too long. But I still lead a normal life and can EVEN jog!! So I guess I'm not too bad. Don't worry! The medication the doc gave you will make you feel better and those lung function test numbers will creep back up to where they are supposed to be. But if you have any questions, this board is great!

Re: Hi Newbie Here, Just Diaganosed at Age 43

Hello
I'm 39 and got diagnosed about 4 months ago with Asthma. I had Pneumonia that would not go away. After several tests,,,many months of strong meds,,,I got under control. It took me about 2 months on my Asthma meds to start to feel like a person again. Hang in there,,,it does get better,,,just takes some time. I'm glad you found this board,,,it has ben a blessing for me.
Hope your feeling good

Re: Hi Newbie Here, Just Diaganosed at Age 43

Reading these posts, this is the first time I've ever heard of a hormone/asthma connection. I find that fascinating since I am having other health problems and have been for quite some time now that I am absolutely convinced are hormone related and I am having a huge, huge problem getting someone to listen to me. I know this is not the hormone problem board, but now I am even more convinved that I have to keep working hard to get myself heard and tested for hormones. I am convinced I am going to have to go outside of my HMO and just get a doctor on my own and pay cash and get the tests done I want. To anyone reading, you know your own bodies, don't take no for an answer, and keep going till you find the answers you need. If anyone has any other information on asthma and hormones, can you share it? I will do a search also myself. Being a woman, and describing symptoms to doctors, I have heard and lots of women hear, take Prozac or go see a counselor, and that is not my problem. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH ME and the problems change depending upon my monthly cycle and now out of nowhere I have asthma too..I am very interested in this new research I will now do...
Thanks for the tip!
