antibiotics for sinus infection

I need some advice im very sensitive to powerful anitbiotics. I have a bad sinus infection that has now spread to my eyes i am very scared. I am currently taking eye drops that are working for the eye but the infection is getting worse in my sinuses. The dr gave me biaxin but the side effects scare the crap out of me. I was wondering if anyone knows of an effective antibiotic other then amoxicillan and augmentin that works good on resistent bacteria. I need something thats not going to give me alot of cns side effects.

Re: antiotics for sinus infection

David,

you need to find out if your sinus conditions are due to a blockage or physical defect of some kind (devaited septum, bone spur, etc.) If this is the case, surgery may be the only option of clearing up the problem. Antibiotics will not work if there is a physical problem.

Augmentin works well. Worst case scenario would include Vancomycin.

I would not under any circumstances take a quinolone or floroquinolone antibiotic (Floxin, Avelox, Levaquin, Cipro). I suffered potentially permanent nerve damage and chronic tendinitis from these. The pain I suffered from this drug made the sinus problems seem like a minor cold. There is no treatment for an adverse reaction to a quinolone. The average person takes 6 months to one year to recover completely. Most end up on disability.

These drugs are so new, the doctors don't even know exactly how they work.

The most important thing is to irrigate as much as you can (using a machine).

Re: antiotics for sinus infection

what side affects did you have? I had stomach aches after BIAXIN
augmenton worked better for me, you must check to see if your sinus
infection is not allegeries, they are close in symtoms and maybe you won't
need antibiotics next time.

Re: antiotics for sinus infection

I would go an ENT, I had horrible sinusitis and ended up having a sinus reduction, my adnoids removed and adiveated septum, since my surgery about 18 mos ago I haven't had a sinus infection since.

Re: antiotics for sinus infection

I can feel your pain! I am still getting over my nasty chronic sinus infection and have been on antibiotics for 6 weeks.
Augmentin works well, though I saw you asked for alternatives. Do not take Avelox!!!!!!!! I took one pill and ended throwing the rest down the drain. Very bad side effects!
I am now on Bactrim (actually the generic version but I can't remember the name) I have had no problems with it and take it twice a day.
The problem with these sinus infections is that they take FOREVER to get rid of!!! Be patient and hang in there!
