Question Ultram Withdrawal

Hi, I have nerve damage in my upper abdomen from
having gallbladder surgery (gallbladder removed)
almost 2 years ago (this coming November will be 2 yrs.)
well I have been in chronic pain since that surgery, and for
the past year I have been taking ultram (prescribed by my doctor)
well I want to get off of ultram because ultram makes me sick
the only reason why I took it for this long was because it helped
with my pain. Well now when I try to stop taking it I go thru
horrible withdrawals (when my doctor prescribed it to me over a year
ago she said that It wasn't addicting and that I wouldn't go thru
withddrawals, YEAH RIGHT!!)
I just saw a (phycatrist) spelling?? and she prescribed me Amitriptyline
for my nerve pain and she said that it would help with my depression
and help me sleep at night and it would help with the withdrawals
once I am on it for awhile, so she said to taper down from the ultram
in a few weeks once the Amitriptyline kicks in.
Does anyone think that this will help with the withdrawals??
I use to take 3 to 4 pills of ultram a day but now I only take 1 pill a day,
I cut it in half and take a half of it in the morning and then the other
half at night. Well I still get sick even tho that I lowered the dosage
and I am still going thru withdrawals, and it's been about a month since
I tapered down.
I just want to stop being on pain med's and try something else for my
nerve pain so that's why the phycatrist prescribed me the Amitriptyline.
Any thoughts on this?? Kim

Re: Ultram Withdrawal

I wish you luck and good health. I have never taken Ultram. BUT my elderly mother does. She has taken it for many years for constant muscle pain and spasms in her sides, but I don't know the doseage she takes. She never had any bad effects from it. It worked very well for her. Almost five weeks ago she had knee replacement surgery and the Knee Dr stopped her Ultram that very day and gave her some other pain meds. She is still taking the one the knee Dr gave her because she is still recovering from the knee surgery. I just wanted to say that she never had any withdrawel problems stopping the Ultram cold turkey. However she prefers the Ultram for her muscle pains/spasams and will go back to it as soon as she is released from the Knee Therapy center.
I do think ultram is technically an anti-convulsant.. isn't it? ... so maybe tapering down is the very best idea, since they recommend tapering down with that type of pill. But Mom did not taper at all and she had no problem.

Re: Ultram Withdrawal

Kim

I wish there were something that you could take to make you feel better. The only thing that will help is time. I know exactly how you feel going through a slow taper. It drags on and on. The good news is that you are on a very low dose and were never on a high dose. There are some people taking 20-30 a day. You might want to slow down the taper to where you are more comfortable. There really is no rush. Usually with a quick detox or cold turkey there is a much higher rate of relaps. I wish the best for you. Know that you are not alone.

Peace

Re: Ultram Withdrawal

hi kim...well, i was on ultram for about 2 years. and, my doctor said the same thing...that it wasnt addicting...well i was up to about ten or more a day. and, the w/d were a nightmere. you are lucky. my advise is to just stop cold turky. since yo are on such a low dose. youll be sick for a week but, after feel alot better. you can also ask your doctor for "clonidine" its a blood pressure pill...but, it works wonders for taking care of the worst of the w/ds. hope i helped, dave
