Re: Can't sleep!!!!!

Insomnia is not listed as a side effect. I've never been on it, so can't give you a personal account. Good luck.

Re: Can't sleep!!!!!

I have been taking lotrel for a few days and I have been having trouble sleeping, my doctor said the calcium channel blockers should not cause insomnia, when I took verapimil 100 mg last week it also caused insomnia that got better when I quit taking it, of course I went to the bathroom more tho, so just because it is not on the label or a recognized side effect doesn't mean it is not the cause, try getting on something else or stop taking it for a couple of days to see if the insomnia improves,

that way you can rule it out if the insomnia continues, my question is why would blood pressure meds cause insomnia, I mean if it slows your system down it makes sense it would make you more relaxed (it does me)and make it easier to sleep, unless the body is counteracting it by releasing more adrenalin or dopamine or not allowing serotonin to be converted to melatonin, you know the body trying to compensate for teh slow down, but then why would it do that if in fact it is doing that?

Re: Can't sleep!!!!!

When I was on lisinopril I managed to get to sleep without trouble but kept on waking up in the night-up to 5 times. it got progressively harder to get back to sleep. As I could n't see my own doctor to change medication the duty doctor gave me sleeping pills to tide me over Christmas when there were up to 10 of us staying in this house. I was put on nifedipine but the sleeping problems continued. I then found I had a normal BP except at the doctor's so came off medication. However it took me more than 3 months to get back to sleeping properly and get rid of the chronic constipation. I am now fine with a bp of 105/78 this morning.Just stopping the medication did not bring my system back to normal.

Good luck to you all

Re: Can't sleep!!!!!

Gambino,
Astra-Zeneca indeed DOES list insomnia as the main "nervous/psychiatric" side effect from felodipine (Plendil), with depression, anxiety and irritability pulling up the rear.

I found these symptoms were EXTREMELY pronounced with a horrible sister drug, amlodipine (Norvasc) and would never consider either of these drugs appropriate for plain vanilla hypertension without other severe cardiac conditions requiring heart weakening.

If you are taking a beta blocker also, the insomnia is likely to be even worse because the CCB enhances the effect of the BB!
