Afraid to get addicted to Xanax

I've been taking medication for anxiety and panic attacks for about 2 years, but it wasn't Xanax. Due to some side effects (hormote-related) I had to stop my regular medication and now am waiting for an appointment with a psychiatrist in about a month. In the meantime, my regular doctor said has me on Alprozalam (Xanax). My main problem is insomnia and I have to take 0.75 mg of the thing to sleep through the night. I've only been taking it for a little over a week, but will have to be on it before I can see a psychiatrist next month. I am scared to death about getting addicted to the thing!! I tried not taking it at night, and I just can't sleep (my muscles are tense and twitching a little and nothing helps until I take Xanax). And the next day I feel a anxious, too.
Does anybody have any suggestions? Should I try to taper off little by little even if it means no sleep? How long will insomnia last do you think? Also, I read about taking Melatonin with Xanax and how it helps some people to get off it. I've tried it on a couple of nights, but with no results.
Any help will be appreciated!

Re: Afraid to get addicted to Xanax

You should not be addicted to Xanax after a week. Can you try something over the counter like Sominex instead, it's the same exact ingredient used in Tylenol PM & Benadryl (diphenhydramine I think?) Still I wouldn't even use that too many nights in a row. I take it once in a blue moon when I can't sleep.

Re: Afraid to get addicted to Xanax

I tried Tylenol PM, and even hypnosis tapes to help me sleep, but my problem is muscle tension that wouldn't go away. Is there any muscle relaxant I can take that's over the counter?

I don't know. I know Flexeril is popular if your doctor will prescribe it for you.

Re: Afraid to get addicted to Xanax

You can buy melatonin 3mg capsules at any pharmacy, and they should help you sleep as melatonin is one of the chemicals that tells our body to sleep. I take Flexaril for the spasms, but it is very closely related to tricyclic ADs such as Elavil (by itself it would prob make you sleep) which is used in small doses to treat nerve pain. I guess I cant post a link here but here is a little information on melatonin. Good luck!

Given its ability to regulate body rhythms and promote normal sleep, Melatonin has proven useful not only for insomnia, but for jet lag and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) as well.

Melatonin is a product of the pineal gland, where it is synthesized from the amino acid tryptophan. Under normal conditions, Melatonin levels foreshadow the sleep cycle, usually increasing rapidly from the late evening until midnight, then decreasing as morning approaches. In this way, Melatonin helps regulate circadian rhythm, the body's 24-hour "dark-light clock" that governs the timing of hormone production, sleep, body temperature, and more. Not surprisingly, people with high levels of Melatonin usually sleep longer and more soundly than those with a deficiency. For example, the elderly, who produce less Melatonin than the young and middle-aged, are typically more susceptible to insomnia. Similarly, events that throw Melatonin levels out of synch--such as a jet trip between time zones--seem to interfere with production of the hormone and thus disrupt sleep. Consumption of alcohol, tobacco, and narcotics has a similar effect.

Most experts recommend taking from 1 to 3 milligrams of Melatonin approximately 20 minutes before bedtime.

Check with your doctor before combining Melatonin with the following:
Beta blockers such as Inderal, Lopressor, and Tenormin, Large amounts of ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) Mood-altering drugs such as diazepam (Valium) and Steroid medications such as prednisone
